I have one of these Honey Well Magic Stat digital thermostats for my home heating. It works fine but it seems that on colder days as soon as it shuts off it turns itself right back on. I mean it turns the furnace off and thin 15sec later it turns it back on. Is there something I'm missing here? I thought I heard that there is a way to adjust these things so it will kick on when the temperature drops 3-4 degrees. Mine kicks back on before the temperature changes at all. Unfortunately I can’t find the owners manual. Any suggestions?

Re: Digital Thermostat Home Heating Question.

Well I tried the honey well brand and they have been in bussiness for years and had the same problem.
I went and got me a hunter model number 44760 7 day programable and am very well satsfied with it.
It has a fail safe on that will not let it kick the motor back on in less then three min. This protects the motors and compressors from quick restarts.
I set my temp at 72 and it comes on at 69 and brings it up.
It reads the temp inside the house and not the temp off the coils to know when to restart.

You might be able to download the manual from the Honeywell website.

I use the LUX brand digital programable thermostats. Have 6 total and have not had a problem with one. The oldest is from the mid 90's. Used to be able to get them at home depot, but the last time I wanted one I had to order if from a supplier on the 'net.

Most thermostats have a adjustment for cycle time in the back, that is seldom adjusted, ck the installation instrutions to see if it has the adjustment

Are you sure your furnace isn't kicking off due to a problem not related to the thermostat? If there is an airflow sensor in the furnace it will kick off if the filter is too dirty for efficient airflow. Could be loose t-stat wire connections too.

I have a Honeywell programmable and it works nicely. Every home should have a programmable t-stat IMO.

Re: Digital Thermostat Home Heating Question.

pretty sure my old Honeywell had dipswitches for oil vs. gas furnace vs. FAE, also hysteresis or responsiveness setting. I have a Lux now, only thing I have done to make it respond FASTER, is change from celcius to fahrenheit... suppose you could go to celcius... the unit may just be shot too....

Might be adjustable at the furnace, if you have a newer computer controlled model.

Re: Digital Thermostat Home Heating Question.

I installed a Honeywell programmable and assumed I was paying for the best stat available. The Honeywell had a feature called "climate watch,or temperature guard or something like that".The feature would gage how fast the temp falls after the stat turns down the preset temp and somehow calculates when to turn the temp back up so it reaches the set temp at the set time. The result was that the heat never really went down for any length of time.We set the stat to turn the heat down at 8:30am when we leave the house and to go back up at 4pm for when we get home at 5:30.You could not set the Honeywell to do that.It would turn the temp back up within an hour of when it turned down. The heat was up all day so I returned the Honeywell and purchased the least expensive one the Home Depot carried and it has worked perfectly since.Sometimes you dont get what you pay for.!!Charlie

Re: Digital Thermostat Home Heating Question.

Charlie I hear ya. I have had pretty good luck with the Honey Well Thermostats and yes they are pricey. I liked LUX but the first one I bought was defective but that was years ago. I returned it and bought a Honey Well.

I found the problem, I had the thing set wrong. On the back of the unit are 3 dip switches and Hystat mentioned that. I had the fuel switch set to the right fuel (Gas) but had the dip switches set for electric. How I screwed that up I do not know. Anyway, I positioned them correctly and so far so good. Thank you everyone for your suggestions.
