Hello All:

Just recently I took my boat in to the local marina (boat has a 1984 75hp Mariner outboard) to have it looked over. It is a really tough starter and runs terribly at low speeds. I took it in and they told me after a couple of days that I need to have some major work done to the outboard. Basically they said at least one of the labtyrinth seals is bad and after all is said and done it would cost me about $1000 parts and labor. It is also a major overhaul so they can't get the thing done this year. They told me that if they kept it over the winter so they could work on it at their leisure they would cut me a deal of about $200 off.

Anyway my question is I know this is a major overhaul, but is their estimate a fair one? I don't know much at all about this situation and I don't want to be taken for a ride. Any inputs on this would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: dilemma

Yeah, some of the mechanics I have talked to that do this for a living around here charges around $1200.00. If your real good with motors, you can do it yourself for around $200.00 with a good shop manual. Are you sure your mechanics arent shootin you bull?

Re: dilemma

I would look at doing a carb overhaul, yourself, in the off season. And seach out any other maintenance that need to be done. This may solve your problem.
Afterall, if they rebuild it, you'll want the rest of the motor in top shape too.

tsutter...do you know if they tested it for the labrythe seals being bad...or are they just telling you that they are?

Generally a double mix of oil will show improved results if the seals are bad. <---that is the test.

TMD

Hey TMD and marinegrh:

Could you elaborate a little more on the test for a bad labtyrinth seal? What does a "double mix" of oil equate to. Sorry for my ignorance of the subject. I'd like to know a little more about this when I ask the mechanic.

Thanks much for your replies
