Help Please !!!

Had my boat running today no problem turned it off. Took my plugs out to have a look, cleaned and put them back in. Leads where left hanging down the side of the engine and I turned the key to try and start it then relalised what was wrong. put them back on then would not start..

I then found out that it will start if I hold the key in the start position but starter stays engaged. and as soon as I let the key back to the run position it shuts off. have I blowen a diode when turning engine over with leads hanging mayhave arched????

Turn your ignition switch to run, and check the purple wire going to the coil, do you have it there?

It was starting all day today till I left the leads off the plugs and tried to start it now notting unless I hold the key in start but means starter is still engaged.

There are no other fuses or connections on the engine that could fail. But have a look under the instrument panel. There should be a 20A fuse in the purple wire coming from the ignitions switch.
Also, check your emergency kill switch if you have one.

Ok thanks I will report back to you tomorrow.
Lanyard switch is ok I checked it today.
Just gonna look on the net now to find out how to test the diodes.
I have spare ones cause I had to change one two years ago.

Thanks Colm

Not that it's just hooked up, it has to work electrically so you have power to the coil.

There is power to the coil as the engine will stay running if I hold the key in the start position but this will keep the starter engaged tho.

Turn the key to run position, then check the power to the coil. NOT while the starter is cranking, I know it works then, but that is not the problem.

Thanks for your replys Don S,
You where right it was a dodgey kill switch that was at fault I was jumping the gun with thinking it may have been something more.

Thanks Colm
