First of all thanks for all of your help!!! Secondly I am trying to get the exhaust off of my 470 Mercruiser, but it wont slide off the bolts because the dipstick assembly only lets it slide about 2 inches out!!! How do you remove the tube the dipstick is housed in??? It has a 7/8ths sleeved nut that looks like it is the thing that connects it to the block but i am 6'4" 260 lbs and i wrenched on it until I thought i was going to pop a vessel and that nut wouldnt move even a little bit!! is there an easier way because I guess I dont have the muscle to turn it off. By the way it is a 1983 170 horse 470 Mercruiser.

Thanks again for all the help

Re: Dip stick assembly

Pull the engine out so you can get to it. If you break that fitting off, you are going to have even worse problems.
Now you see what us poor ole marine techs have to deal with on a daily basis.
Then we have to explain to the customer why it cost so much.

Sad,... But True......

Most boats are designed so the motor Must be pulled to do Alot of jobs......

The Good part is,... With the Tools,.... It's a 1/2hr. job to put it on a stand....

Thanks again guys !!! I see what you mean about working on them!!! The problem is i still need to get the dip stick out of the way it is gonna come out with the engine so pulling it wont help!!! Should I try to take the intake off and then unbolt the head and then it will slide that way but I dont want to do all that!!!!!

Re: Dip stick assembly

If you pull the engine, you can get to the fitting MUCH easier and not break off the fitting or damage the pan. That dipstick tube is not going to prevent you from pulling the engine. You do not have to dissassemble the engine or pull the manifolds to pull the engine out of the boat.
Do you have an OEM service manual? It shows how to pull the engine, and work on the other parts. You probably should get one if you don't have one already.
