Bought a 2000 308 Express with twin 5.0 volvopenta engines. THey have not been run in 5 years so I am starting slow with what I am doing. I went to change the oil today and one dipstick pulled right out but left the top cover stuck on and I am fighting to get it off the Port engine the top came off but left all but 3 inches of the dipstick in the tube. Any siggestions on how to get the dipstick out? I have to order new ones either way but not sure about the dipstick tubes that are on these. These are my first VP engines and they are a little different so far the Merc.
Thanks
Joe

If there is a remainder of the tube above the block get a bolt that fits snugly in the tube then with some Vice grips try to rotate and pull the tube and hopefully the remainder of the dipstick will come out with it.
If the tube is flush with the block get a5/16” or a 3/8” starting tap with some grease and thread the inside of the tube. Get a stud of the same thread and with some spacers over the end of the tube and a nut you should be able to pull the tube out and hopefully with the broken dipstick.
I have had success with this method and so will you.
Old Navy guys are good with damage control.

the long block is identical to merc, because its a GM truck motor. only the bolt-on bits differ the motor from a mercruiser

if the above posting from kenny gets out the remaining tube bits and the piece of dipstick, that is fantastic.

however if it doesnt, be prepared to pull the motor to pull the pan to retrieve the bit of stick left in the motor.

for installing the dipstick, I use a pair of vice-grips that I closed the jaws and drilled a hole at the jaw line. this allows me to clamp onto the tube just above the bubble flare and pound the new tube into the block with a hammer

Thanks for the help seems easy enough to get a replacement and I stall since its just one nut holding it to the fitting. Work other issues right now which is what I signed up for when I bought it..but slow and steady she will come to life again
