I'm just curious how these "direct reversing" outboards work. For reverse they just start the motor in the other direction, right? How the heck does it do that? Does the starter just turn the other way?

Just wondering...
THIS IS A VERY OLD SYSTEM, BUT YES THE MOTOR STARTED AND RAN BACKWARDS FOR REVERSE. LET ME SAY, IT WAS SUPPOSED TO START BACKWARDS, DIDN'T ALWAYS WORK AND MANY OF DOCKS AND BOATS WERE DAMAGED THAT WAY.
hello
yep that motor was an engineering wonder. we wondered if the guy that did the design work was drawn and quartered or just quartered
that is why they called them Dock Busters. the starter had a double ended bendix and used two starting solidoids. one for reverse and one for fwd. the engine was off for nuetral. needless to say sometimes they would fail to start when the lever was moved to an in-gear position thus earning the nickname of dock buster
good luck and keep posting
I have an old Kickaufer(spelling) 70 hp and dock buster is an understatement. Once it is warmed up it runs like a champ, but when it is cold, get out of the way when I start it. It is a fun motor to play around with. Runs like a screaming banshee.....
