Directional Indicator Steering System

I recently purchased a nice 1970 Mercury 650 Thunderbolt and it came with this steering system connected. I have a better steering system on my boat, so I'd like to remove this one, but darned if I can figure out how to get it off my motor! It appears, that if I remove the large nuts on both sides of the motor mount that has the steering piston going through it, the motor might fall off. I have the Seloc On-line repair manual, and it covers the steering system, but it does not show the cable from the steering mechanism to the motor.

You might post a photo. Normally a steering arm would pull out of the tilt tube.

Good idea! Here it is. Note on the right side of the tilt tube, I've loosened the knurled nut, and would have expected the steering shaft going straight through to the other side to just slide out. But then when I turn the steering wheel with the nut tight, the shaft does not move. Rusted in there? Will it take a Mark IX bashing tool to hammer it out?

The cable that runs throught the tilt tube is rusted in there. I'd say that's why PO put the snotty looking POS on it. Too lazy to do the job right Yes, you're going to need a mark IX bashing tool. I'd also use a CIG spanner set (oxy torch)....
