dirt in the cylinder

I have an Evinrude 150xp (E150STL CEM). After driving 30-35mph across the lake I pulled back on the throttle and found that it was stuck and could not slow down. I pulled the lever back up, although it was very hard to do and at about the same time the RPM (quick loud roar) went way up. All this happened at the same time I cut the engine using the key. I restarted and engaged the motor and slowly went back to dock. I noticed when I increase the throttle lever I was not speeding up any more than I was going (a lot of play in the lever now). I took to boat shop compression showed #1-100, #2-95, #3-100, #4-95, #5-85, #6-95. They removed the head cover and #5 showed a lot of dirt and grit in that cylinder and they told me a dirt dobber nest looked like it probably made its way through. The boat shop wants to bore all 6 cylinders and replace the VRO. I was wondering if replacing the rings on the other 5; then either hone the #5, replace the sleeve or bore that cylinder out would potentially fix me up in pretty good shape? For rings and any other parts is there a place you recommend on-line buying from? I assume I need to trace the lines from air intake back to the cylinders and thoroughly cleanout any debris that may be left there from dirt. Back on the VRO I hear about instead of putting in the VRO pump put another type of pump instead and mix oil gas at the pump any comments? Plan to buy a service manual, also will I need a parts manual? The boat place wanted $3000+ to do this, I figure if I did it myself I wouldn't spend that much if my labor is free? Any info much appreciated.

Kent

Re: dirt in the cylinder

If it is truly just dirt I would clean it out, replace the head with a new gasket and clean the carbs (gotta do that anyway you go). At that point you can blow out all the lines. Crank her back up and do a decarb deal. Just to see whats what.

Did the throttle cable break or something? The thing about the throttle is a bit baffeling. Has the boat been sitting a long time?

Good luck!

How would I know if the throttle cable broke? The boat had been sitting for approx. 1 year. Does the compression of 85 bother you enough to do anything else with the heads?

You make it sound a lot better than the boat shop!

If the cylinders are not scored then clean them out, put them back together, and do a decarb. It should bring the #s back over 100.

What is a "dirt dobber nest"? Is that anything like a bacon stretcher, wire stretcher, or left handed hammer?

No, its more like a skyhook or a chrome muffler bearing.

If you dont have 'em in your area just be thankful. They look almost like a wasp and build nests out of mud or dirt. They seem to like boats as much as we do.
