took the beast out this morning for a quiet cruise. Early - 1st 15-30 minutes, could not get over 112 knots at 4k rpm and the engine sounded as though it was really working hard, Later, the speed was 29 knots at 38K and the engine sounded as though it was not straining. The beast is kept in the water, has not had its bottom cleaned since late spring. I believe the crud that builds up-slime, moss, etc on the bottom slowly ablates as the boat is in motion - kind of a self- cleaning whic then allows more speed?
Any thoughts?

I would suggest you do your racing within the first 15 minues of a run. At 112 knot at 4K rpm, you must be getting great mileage compared to only 29 Knots at 38K. I would seriously look at some valve float at 38K

Seriously, yes most of the big stuff will fall off after a while. A diver and a brush will help a lot a couple of days prior to a long trip.

Re: dirty bottom?

Thanks Don
Until the past couple of years, my boating has been in fresh water and a trailer boat. Southern Md is a wonderful place but how the crud grows- unbelieveable. Just wish my lawn would do as well -only weeds grow there!

I have a diver that does mine, charges $50.My boat is 30'.The way I look at it is that I burn 150 to 175 gals of gas a day.If I use my boat at least 2 or 3 times in a month, the bottom is some what clean. If I only get to use it once,a call to the diver is needed.

Our diver works for a buck a foot, and yes, the crud grows quickly here, even on relatively new bottom paint.
