Dirty carbs?

We've been chasing a motor issue for a few months now. My 1995 Mercury 2.0L 150 hp carb motor will not rev over 2000 rpm and if it does get on plane it falls at least 500 rpm short of the usual WOT 6000 rpm (there have no prop changes, etc., before this started)

This condition first appeared right after I decarbed the motor (following the directions on the can of Power Tune) through the carbs on the first trip back at the lake. I replaced the fuel filter, bulb and line to the motor, fuel coupler, fuel pump diaphragm and made sure the fuel tank vent was working properly.

My mechanic (good guy) has replaced every electrical ignition component (VR's, stator, trigger, switch boxes) with no change after each component was installed. Compression and leak down tests were also done with all cylinders at 125-128 psi (cold) and the carb synching is correct

I believe now decarbing the motor loosen debris which has blocked the high rpm jets, passages, etc. in one or more of the carbs. Checking the main jets they were clear and there was no apparent debris visible. My mechanic states since the motor fires right up, idles very smooth and shows no evidence of any carb issues it's not a carb issue. I disagree and think the carbs should be disassembled completely cleaned since all electrical parts of the old "spark or fuel" theory have been eliminated.

The "long winded" question are the carbs at fault? I've owned the boat since February 07 and I don't know the maintenance history and up to when I performed the decarbing it ran great. I have since tried decarbing motor again but with no change.

Any thoughts would be very helpful and possibly solve our debate. I have read on several message boards of the same symptoms and the leading fix has been the other owners trading or selling "the problem..."

Re: Dirty carbs?

Did you put a new fuel pump kit or just the diaphram? If just the diaphram, get a new rebuild kit and install all the components in the correct order.
Have you tried using a portable fuel tank? Are you running premix or oil injection?
It is hard to fix such a problem just throwing expensive parts at the engine.
How did you run the power tune through the carbs? If you just sprayed it through the throat of the carbs, nothing went into the float chambers. Those carbs should have fixed jets. Have you tried drain the carbs?
Have you tried squeezing the fuel priner bulb while have the problem? Have you tried the fuel enrichening setting by pushing in the ignition switch? This will give it extra fuel, if that that is the issue, the rpms should increase.
Have you done anything with the throttle linkage, if so, time for a link and syn.

Re: Dirty carbs?

I have been having problems like you describing for a month now.

What I have tried is pumping the primer ball hard and that seems to clear things up and motor runs better.

Also, tilting motor up and down helps,
Also, when running with cooler air, morning or evening seems to help.

I know those things are not your solution but if any of them work then might give you a hint of something.

Re: Dirty carbs?

Put a complete fuel pump kit in it and the oil injection is still on the motor working properly. When I did the Power Tune I sprayed the carb throats but sprayed more into the tubes and air/idle jets (actually putting the spray tube into the tubes/jets in each carb).

As I mentioned above we removed the main jets checking for debris which drained all three carbs (fuel looks good) used compressed air and a link & synch has also been done. When using the "choke" while the motor is in gear running it does decrease the rpm and "cuts" the motor back. Also have made sure bulb is not soft.

Again I believe it's fuel related... in the carbs.

The portable fuel tank is next.

Re: Dirty carbs?

Since you didn't have the problem before the decarb and it started right after it I am with you, tear the carb down and clean them. This sounds like one of the problems none of the decarb boys want to talk about.
