disabled background on desktop

I have a win me computer that all of the sudden has the desktop background disabled. I have ran antivirus on it and resolved all viruses. As you look in display properties, you can change the pattern but the background is grayed out and disabled. If you choose a pic and click set as background image, nothing happens but the next time you reboot your computer, it displayes durring boot up but there is a point to where it returns back to the pattern. What would cause this and can you correct the problen without reinstalling the operating system? Any help would be greatly appriciated. Thanks

I think it will take a re-install of the OS. However, with ME, you will not have to remove it first, and you should not lose anything. When I was using ME I had to reload the OS about every 5 or 6 months because of crazy glitches like you described.

If I reinstall ME, will I have to reinstall my programs or anything at all afterwards???

You shouldn't have to reinstall anything.

Sometimes installing the OS over itself will not resolve issues!<br />Is the hard drive partitioned into 2 parts?<br />Sometimes the best thing to get it back working right is to blow away the OS and re-format the drive.Then re-install the OS.<br />Windows ME is the biggest piece of crap they ever made..<br />The first thing i would do is un-install the graphics drivers and install the latest version of those..

graphics drivers reinstalled w/o change. evetything is on one partition. If a reinstall wipes my registry, I am screwed....

Maybe its a problem in the bios..<br />Did this start after running a windows update or installing something else?<br />I did an upgrade on a friends pc awhile back.<br />He had win-98 and we upgraded to XP..all of his programs and saved file were still there..
