I have never worked on a boats electrical system before but I want to rewire my boat,i have installed a car stereo before. I have a 12 volt system with two batteries. If I disconnect the two batteries is it still possible to get electrocuted?

Re: Question about electrical system?????

Disconnect the batteries and your fine as long as your not hooked to shore power. If your rewiring, use tinned strand wire to the proper size. You don't want to use any solid core wire. Good luck.

Ahhhh, Nope. 12 volt battery won't electrocute you to begin with..... Looking at that pic, best of luck figuring out where to start. I would be more concerned w/ fire.....

As long as there is no 110 / 220 volt supply in there, you are good to go with the batteries disconnected.

You are gonna have to work at it to get electrocuted, only 12 volts. You will need more batteries for that. . .

You can't be electrocuted from 12 volts but you can get burned. If you wonder how that works, just get your metal watch band across +12 volts and ground. Or your wedding band. I've seen it happen and you will be permanently branded.

Why use tinned wire

Bare copper wiring gets oxidation along its surface over time, eventhough it is in the insulation jacket. So, your connections could become faulty. If you have ever tried to work on an older boat or trailer 's electrical wiring, you'll know why tinned wire is preferred.

What I was thinking was to install a new fuse panel from blue seas. My main objective is to install a stereo and try to organize all of the wiring in the center console. I just inherited the boat and would like to learn and become familiar with all the wiring. I have read12 volt bible. I just want to know if i disconnect both batteries to install the new fuse panel and stereo I want to make sure I won't get shocked lol

Re: Disconnecting battery question

If you disconnect the batteries, there will be no power in the wires so you can do the wiring changes that you need without worrying about getting shocked. This is with the assumption that you are not connected to any other electrical system. (shore power like 120volt ac)

There are no capacitors or other components in a typical boat system that can shock you when the batteries are disconnected. The comments above about being careful when wearing a metal watch or ring are valid concerns while the power is connected so you may want to remove those items when working or some will tape over them to prevent them from making electrical contact. Once the batteries are disconnected this will no longer be a problem. During your project, making a diagram of the wiring system identifying wire colors and putting labels on may help a lot in the future.

A rule of thumb is "when in doubt on what size wire to use, go to the bigger wire. Too small a wire will not be able to handle the energy it is being required to carry and will get hot. This can cause some serious problems.

Good luck with your project
