Resetting timing upon removing the idle stabilizer is more about WOT timing than idle smoothness. Idle speed is adjusted with idle timing. WOT timing is a combination of trigger position and Bias to the switchbox from the idle stabilizer, which is way you want to remove the stabilizer, when they go bad and advance timing too much at WOT the rods can come right out of the engine.
