I'm wanting to remove the foot on this 57 E'rude 35hp #2502806704 (on the Freeze plug). I'm sort of lost on how to disconnect the shift rod. How does this shift rod disconnect?

I will be doing the same on the 35hp Johson version of the same year so I can replace the impellers and clean the foot (maybe prep for paint) on both motors. Yep I have 2 projects going at the same time.

Here is a link to my other thread.

Small window on the side of the motor leg, held on by two screws. Remove the window and you'll see a small brass thingy behind it with two 3/8" hex bolts. Remove the bottom bolt. Make sure the unit is not hanging by the shift rod when you do this, as it is easy to strip the bolt's threads...

Re: Disconnecting the shift rod?

I believe you drop the foot a little ways and you have to reach up in the inch and a half wide gap you'll make when you seperate the foot from the midsection. then you should be able to get the shift rod connector disconnected by reaching up in the bottom of the midsection with a 7/16 socket. You should see the connector in the bottom of the midsection. It's kind of tricky!
good luck,

Thanks guys I got it off of there. I feel like such a goof because I had a diagram that I found but I don't recall it showing the little plate.

When you put it back together, make sure the groove in the shift rod lines up perfectly with the bolt in the connector. If it doesn't, you'll strip your bolt and all sorts of hassles ensue. Get a flashlight and look.
