Pollution control is everyone?s business however I believe that the Sanitation authority should have the responsibility to make disposal of common items easy in order to help people comply. It is no secret that some will instead conceal banned items in the trash as a means of disposal.

A prime example is the disposal of small (hand held) gas canisters (Propane & Mapp gas used for lanterns & torches). These are sold in many types of stores however they fall outside of refuse collection systems. A small, almost insignificant statement on the container indicates that proper disposal is necessary.

As an example of what can be done, Tires, batteries and waste oil have provisions for disposal with the Sanitation system and/or the vendors of those products.

I have seen empty LP containers at the scrap yard, The larger 20lb ones, but as long as they are metal and empty they would be welcomed I'm sure.

I refill mine from a 20 pounder with the adapter.

I get alot more mileage from the 1 pounders this way, and I bring the old ones in as scrap iron when they get too old to refill.

Around here, metal recyclers require all pressurized vessels to punctured. Flammable containers need to be cut in half and not smashed flat. Gas tanks have to be competley cut in half. I guess it determines who the recycler is.

The label states "Never refill this cylinder. ... Federal law forbids transportation if refilled - penalty up to $500,000 and 5 years imprisonment. (49 U.S.C. 5124)."
Do not puncture.

Golly!! Seems the only thing you can (legally) do is keep them forever. :(

Do not puncture.

So, do not 'transport' them. Refill them and re-use them like I and bouttime007 do!

I use my little Harbor Freight refill adaptor, then test the valve with a liquid leak detector and budda bing, you are off and running.

To h*ll with the overbearing bureacracies. You can thank them for all the new "safe" propane regulators that do not work worth a hoot.

The transporting of refilled bottles is prohibited by the DOT FOR
COMMERCIALLY LICENSED VEHICLES CARRYING CARGO FOR PAY.
