It seems to me that some Un-Americans like to hide behind the word Dissent in their attempt to attack our President and war on terror. It is one thing to not like what we are doing based on that persons own principles and morals and to not agree with what we are doing. It is even OK, and you right, to speak on that dissagreement. But to spin, lie, miss-quote, make-up and half read information just to taint the credibility of our President and the United States with the intent to make our enemies look good and to sway the public and world views "IS" un-American in my book.
What's good for one, is good for the other...

Both sides are guilty of not having their facts straight... Both sides are very good at creating spin, lies, miss-quotes, and making up half read information just to taint the credibility of the President or whomever else in government they wish to target, as long as it suits the opposing sides political agenda....

That is a fact...

I have the power to boot, in the chat room. :D

On a more serious note, from the time I can remember, and that's been a long time  , politician's have told lies to look good and get elected, and then for whatever reason, they have gone back on their word to a certain extent, but I guess thats the way it is suppose to be.

Congress and Senate says nooooo, you can't do this or that, and then there ya go. Another president has lied to get in office. :p

I could never run for office, cause I don't lie. Ever. ;)

What exactly is descent? In my view, it's the same thing. You are denouncing or decenting the ideaology of your country or countrymen, and therefore, are serving the ememy.
In peacetime, it is a thin fence to straddle. In wartime such as now, it is treason.

Re: Dissent or un-American

I believe we're talking about "dissent", but this isn't Wheel of Fortune, so no points deducted for misspelling, hehehe.
There's a fine line between being 'un-American' and the right to free speech. I think that 'un-American', in my book, is not showing due patriotism, eg. not standing as the colors pass in a parade or for the National Anthem, publicly burning the American flag, etc. Freedom of speech, press, religion, and assembly is guaranteed in the Bill of Rights of our Constitution. Heck, even you having the right to complain about those who spread half-truths is your right!
Now I'm as patriotic as the next guy. I fly my flag out front and keep it lighted at night, I sing the National Anthem at ball games, and I stand for the colors in parades. As an American, I support the rights for those who exercise their right of Free Speech. And I refuse to allow our country to return to the days of McCarthy-ism where every perceived act of un-Americanism was labeled as Communism. We've come too far to go back.
Just my $0.02...
Brian

Hey, I agree 100%. I, in no way was implying that we should censor or shut up anyone. I was just trying to suggest that some of these so called "Dissenters" (spelled right ;) ) are standing behind it's definition hiding the fact that the only reason they dissagree with what we are doing now is only becuse they hate George Bush. So in their minds (again, not everyone), their hatred for Bush out weighs the safety of our troops and security of our country. My point is, if some will do this, then I would call it UN-AMERICAN instead of dissent.

Everyone wants to say all politicions are equal when it comes to dirty tricks and politics. I think the ones with a Dem before their names beat all. Like now. The current Dem trashing of the Pres during this time of war is pure politics. I've heard others of the liberal persuasion on this board say that Gore too would have gone into Iraq. They all would have backed Clinton to go there and were all hawks during his presidency. We citizens now have to intrepret what they Dem's would or would not do if in power. What they say is meaningless. Bush....he's a man of his word.

One more thing to clarify my original post. I am talking about individual private citizens (or California driver license carrying ilegals ;) )not politcal parties and their reps.

In addition, I had always thought that talking down your country while being in another was very wrong. Something like an unwritten law/rule.

Tom Cruise, The Dixie Chicks, Depp and others talkin' crap while abroad. This would be dissent at its worst.

Dissent is a freedom. Dissent while abroad, is a freedom worth a smack up the side of the head.

Amen, Skinny.
And dessent durring wartime is just as much propaganda as it was when performed by Tokyo Rose.
It is treason, if you call yourself "American" or "British".
It's an enemy operation if you are Aljazeera.
