Ive got a weird question..

i changed from HYDRO assist shift to Mechanical on my OMC stringer (about 1985) 250 hp (351W)

added the shift assist module (they say its good for electronic ignition)

So if I decide to upgrade to an electronic distributor can I use any aftermarket one and any coil and still have the "bump" switch still work correctly??

the "bump" switch as you call it (or ESA) does nothing except ground out the negative terminal on the coil

so yes, the answer to your question is yes.

get the proper coil for the dizzy you intend to buy

if you buy a pertronix conversion, make sure to read the instructions prior to purchase and get the correct coil for that.

Cool thank you...

Thats what I figured..... Just wanted to be sure..

So I imagine it does not ground it out 109%. Because if it did if you held the switch the engine would die...

I figure it must ground like half the cylinders. Or every other spark. Or something like that..... Kind of cool...

Thanks again! Been looking at hollys website thinking furl injection and electronic ignition.... Just a little leary about the o2 sensor part of the install.... Both exhaust man's are old and showing some hairline cracks. Po leeks yet but it's getting there.... Once you touch something like that.... It will be time to change them...

if you hold it in, it kills the motor. there is no way to only ground out half unless you had individual COP (Coil On Plug)

so if you shift normally (briskly), it only momentarily kills ignition, and that is all that is needed to unload the dog clutches.

however if you shift slowly, you kill the motor.

if you want fuel injection, sell your boat and buy one with fuel injection.

if you have hairline cracks, why risk your motor, you need new manifolds.

you push the switch and RPM drops by 50% no matter how long you hold it... and since I just installed the Module and switches im sure they are correct think about it... if the module sees "RPM" It know EXACTLY how often your coil is firing ...... If you take that number and ground every other one it will reduce the RPM by 50% IF you grounded it out 100% the engine would die... SO im SURE the module is smart enough to do more than ground it out 100%... besides if you were jsut grounding out the coil 100% why would you need a module??? you would just need the switch ths could ground out the coil 100%...

"if you want fuel injection, sell your boat and buy one with fuel injection"

. Why??? I could put fuel injection and electronic ignition on for $1500.00 ish and could do it on a weekend... very easy to do.. a new boat now $150,000.00 plus... big difference. plus I built this boat I love it. a new boat... just like all the others out there..

"if you have hairline cracks, why risk your motor, you need new manifolds." YEs I do need new ones.. but they have not leaked a DROP of water... just showing tiny bits of rust... temp gauge works fine.. if theres a problem or a leak that big I'd know about it FAST.. also if a manifold was to leak externally it would NOT damage the engine... the Manifolds are the LAST place water goes through before exiting... so even if it did leak it would throw hot water into the bilge at worst.. theres TWO bilge pumps and a warning light on my boat... I would know pretty fast if it did leak... and it still would not hurt the engine... or allow it to overheat... it COULD possible sink the boat but as little water as your impeller pumps it would take 10 mins to get enough water in the bilge to cause a problem... but the bilge pumps can pump OUT more than the impeller can pump in..

If you've ever forgotten a plug... you get several mins before you even know about it.. then you are still no where near the point you would sink... so to fill the boat enough to sink it from a manifold leak im sure would take LOTS of time .... if you didnt see the water in your boat WELLLLLLL before it got even CLOSE to being possible to sink you... you really should not have a boat... ( that does not mean they dont need to be replaced it just means im not worried about them yet)

Oh if I was on the ocean yea I might worry a little bit about this... but the 3 lakes I frequent I can get all the way across in minuets... I dont think its worth changing them as of yet... but I will at some point Right now I want to get it running the way I want it... IF I decide to go Fuel injection I would probably change them both at that point..

I bet you are fun to boat with...
