Distributor Advance Curve Question

I am planning to convert my Thunderbolt IV ignition back to the factory setup with riser-mounted module, coil and distr. The previous owner installed and ran an auto HEI distributor with the coil set on top of the dist. cap. Not realizing, i ran the boat for 2 months last summer (454 BBC) and it idled steady, great acceleration, good starting, etc. I know about the marine spark protection.

Can someone explain how they would expect my boat to run with the auto distributor vs. marine, given the different timing curve demands that I have read about in car vs boat motor?

Beside the spark issue, is there any other detriment to the motor if I have to run the auto distributor for a couple months before I can afford the conversion?

Thanks in advance!

Performance wise, it is hard to say without knowing the HEI advance curve. The "base" curve could be fairly close, and by your comments, I'd assume it is.

Beside the spark issue (and possible explosion), I'd say that any other detrimental effect would be of lessor consequence. ;) ie too much advance may cause detonation, which could burn holes through pistons. Pistons and engines are replacable.
