Distributor cap for Merc 850

My engine was running very rough and stalling. When I took off the cowling and began to check the plugs, wires etc one of the plug wires fell off with barely a touch. The end of the wire remained inside the cap. My question is this are the wires part of the dist cap?

On my 73 Merc 500, with kind of a puke brown/tan dist. cap, the wires have a threaded end which screws down into the cap. Yours may be the same, depending on year.
