I just picked up another boat - 1981 with a small block Chevy engine and an OMC 800 outdrive.

The engine has a GM HEI distributor with the coil in cap - and a vacuum advance diaphragm that is hooked up to the 2 bbl carb with a rubber hose. I am assuming this is automotive and not original and should be removed. Am I right that none of the I/O car motors use a vacuum advance?

Re: Distributor?

yup its an auto part. you can get a marine one on line, ebay, or any place that repairs boats.

Think I would do a slow speed test for a few minutes to see how the drive is and the rest of the boat before I ordered the dist.

Re: Distributor?

I have to wonder why on earth they did that?

Maybe a desire to have an inexpensive electronic ignition.

Weird.
