Ron Thanks for the info, I will get the number and call them. Will a stock HEI GM distrubtor work in trhis case? I have acess to one. I do not know what the difference B/T the marine and auto, one mechanic says that since it is electronic the difference is nil. Does antone know?

Re: distrubtor

the marine has mods made to it that allow it to run safely in and enclosed engine area in other words a standard distrubtor is a fire and exp hazard on a boat

tommays

Re: distrubtor

most marine engines spin counterclockwise, and auto engines spin clockwise. that difference is what usually what requires a "marine" distributor. Also, make sure the new distr. has a close enough timing curve and the correct maximum advance for that year/model engine. For example, my 3.0L 4 cylinder has a max timing of 26 deg BTDC, so I would not want a distributor like from my 351w V-8 if it'd fit, which gives a max advance of 34 deg. Too much timing can, and will, cause piston damage.

Endless, My 4.3LX GM V6 Mercruiser uses a mercruiser-designed Thunderbolt ignition system. It is likely the distributor is manufactured by Mercruiser, since the distributor only houses one Thunderbolt Ignition component, and it is a perfect fit! :D

Don't concider an auto distributor, its illegal & dangerous. Marine distributors are spark sheilded to illiminate a fuel ignition source.

Marine engines run a different cam to auto, the distributor may run a different advance curve but thats a minor point.

Aldo

The difference between a mairne unit and an automotive unit is just in venting. You can use a HEI unit if you seal the coil cover and cap, then drill 2 venting holes in the casting at the base plate close to the shaft housing, get some small screen, like water faucet aireator screens and epoxy them over the holes. Its that simple. The thing you will need to do is have the distributor advance system checked and modified to marine specs. DO NOT let the unit over advance the timing or you will loose the motor due to detonation. Most marine applications run about 32 total degrees of timing advance at 3000 rpm.
