DivX update?

I keep getting reminded to download an update. In total it is about 53 mb. I'm not even sure what this is for. I usually use Windows media player for vids and I do not know if MP needs this DivX

The other issue is that there are 4 elements to it; codec, player, web player and converter. You can pick and choose which ones you want. If I should have any of these I will download but I do not want another viewer program or anything else showing up in my startup bar.

I tried to google to get these answers but did not find the answers I want.

What is it that wants to do a DivX update? Media Player?

codecs are normal, as they needed to be able to play different encoded video formats. (playing online or downloaded videos in .AVI, WMV, and other formats)

When you say player/web player, are these Media Player updates? If so, its simply updates to the MP software. But if another app is prompting for this, then it could be something completely different.

What prompts you is the important part. If it isn't something available via Microsoft Update then you'll need to provide more information so we can help you figure out what it is that is trying to download)

The update message showed up when I opened an AVI (from wifes video recorder) file. It opened with WMP and at the same time I got the upgrade notice. It seamed to be from DivX itself though.

I know the codec is important but I just don't want a bunch of other crap downloaded at the same time. The elements I mentioned above were selectable with that download.

Download the codec, because without it the video most likely won't run.

Then run Windows Updates and if there are updates for WMP, they'll be available as an optional update on there.

Looks like you?ll need it sooner or later ? Especially if you?re a videophile

Avoid the Yahoo toolbar though. Like Adobe, they try to sneak it in.

Windows 7 will have DivX ?Built In?

Personally I despise the all differing formats, Quicktime, Real Player, Microsoft Media. Hard to keep up with the upgrades and all the files, icons, registry entries, etc, splattered across the desktop, the menus, and the directory tree.

Dont be so quick to download codecs. A lot of codecs, specially some propiertaries ones used to watch movies online are loaded with adaware and viruses. make sure you get them from a reputable source. Divx, is a reputable source, just make sure you are not getting redirected to another site.

Good basics jevery, but it still does not tell me what all the four elements of the download/update are. If WMP uses DivX, fine. I just don't want a lot of other programs, tool bars or startup thingies.

I also just booted my computer and up pops a reminder to download/update Adobe Flash Player. What the heck is that all about?

If you dont want to have download popups I sugest you disable the "search for update" options that comes in most programs. Then you can get your updates when you need them.

You're right, it's a gamble to download anything. Some programs make way more changes than I'd like, and once done it's very difficult to reverse. If you're not running across video that won't play because you don't have DivX, I'd avoid it. You may be able to use task manager to track down where the popup originates and disable it.

Adobe Flash Player is needed for much of the video on the web (mpeg format I think). Periodic updates are issued for security and other purposes. I consider Adobe products safe and updated when I got the popup. The only "extra" they push is the yahoo toolbar.
