I am just a poor grandmother who wants to get her grandson off the banks when he comes for the summer. I have read a great deal here about floors. Does an 8' boat need more than one section? Can it be 3/4" ply treated or polyurethane? If I understand it right, inflate the boat, flip it upside down and make a template of the floor. Then cut about 1 1/2" inside the line. Use foam pipe tubing around the edge. Does the floor go in when the boat is partially inflated? Is there anything else I am to do? I am pretty handy as my dad had no sons so I was elected. Will we be able to stand up? Was considering getting a small trolling motor for it and making a mount coming up from the floor. That is if we aren't pushing the weight capacity too close. It will be used on the lake and a slow river. I know it won't be the greatest but we will both love being away from the shoreline. Some really nice coves to fish in. I appreciate any help.

1/2 in or 5/8 plywood will work fine mine is 5/8 and more than thick. All I did was paint mine with ACE paint got a gt had them mix it same color as the raft you will need a motor mount and a 30# min Kota or some thing like it the one that Sevlor sell are way underpowered and their battery will not last over 1/2 to 1 hr with their motor its only 18# not much push. Even in a slow river I would get a 30# motor not any smaller.I dint have a pattern for the smaller FH but look a the pic I have and get some idia how to build one.

You may be a poor grandmother, but you sure sound like a good one. I bet your grandson would agree.;) Your proposed floor method will work just fine. There's no reason to make it in sections unless your vehicle can't accomodate it in one piece, but if it can't, you can just build your floor, then cut it as desired and install hinges so it will fold. As you suspect, the floor does go in with the boat partially inflated. You didn't ask, but I've found the best inflation method to be as follows. Inflate it to 90% with a cheapie 12v pump (Coleman, etc.) then top it off with a manual pump. For your trolling motor look for a simple transom mount Minn Kota in the 40# thrust range. You can probably find one on Craigslist, but if you need one pretty quick they're available at Wal-Mart, Academy, etc. and are not prohibitively expensive. Sounds like you'd have no trouble rigging a motor mount, but before you do, figure up the cost and compare it to a ready made one from Sevylor. I suspect there will be little difference and it will likely be easier to install and use than a homemade one. With a hard floor you'll have enough stability to stand, and you'll find that you can easily sit up on the tubes if you want to stretch your legs, change your vantage point, etc. One more thing; if you haven't already acquired the Fish Hunter compare the cost of it and everything you want to do to the cost of a 14' john boat. Not sure about your neck of the woods, but around here a 14 jon and trailer can be had in the $300-$400 range, which is close to what you'll be out on the Fish Hunter by the time it's all said and done. You'd have no trouble handling a boat that size on a trailer. If you already have the raft never mind. Good luck and let us know how you come out on it.

I see you live just north of Little Rock. Can you send one of those over this way? I live just north of Roosevelt Lake in AZ. You might find a 15' trailer, no boat, for that. That is why I went the way of inflatable. With the economy, on craigslist, one can find a 14' aluminum on a trailer, maybe for about $500. This poor grandma hasn't got that to spend.

Understood. Geography is a factor. Good luck on the raft. Let us know how you come out on it.

We just got a 12' Sevylor FH 360 on Craig's list. Got the motor mount and the little trolling motor. Found when we tried the motor mount, the motor is high out of the water. Have to cut down the mount a bit so the motor sits lower. Do not have a floor but hubby is going to make one. We find this gets around wonderful on Saguaro Lake. Hubby has got an off road wagon that we roll everything out to the water's edge and inflate off the battery. Would need to check what marine battery he got but we use very little power inflating the boat and trolling around for 5 or so hours. For the two of us it is great! (no grandchildren yet!) Hubby says the floor is currently not available from sevylor, maybe 2nd hand....but he will make it. We are adding indoor outdoor carpet before the foam tubing. We do use the oars some, but they are not too great. First time out without anchor we floated all over and found an anchor really helps with this kinda boat. Will be trying Roosevelt next time out! maybe we will see you there!!!

You shouldnt have to cut the motor mount the motor has a ajustment to set depth. set the prop about 10IN under water. I have to have mine some if I put alot of weight in it to much in the front raises the rear so have to lowwer it about two or three in and if I am by my self I have to rase it a fu

We thought we didn't need to do anything, but....lowered the 18 lb thrust motor as far as it will go, when we use motor mount. Without mount, using just the attachments on boat, we have no issue. However it is not as sturdy as motor mount. We are not light weights and I sit in middle, hubby at the motor. So not sure what to do.

Hubby has made floor and ready to get out and give it a try when we have a free weekend.
