I have a SS prop on my Merc Alpha 1 3.0L and it has a couple of chips and some rough edges. Has anyone reconditioned their own SS prop? If so, what steps should I be following?

I know they will require balancing, which hopefully won't be an issue, as I have a lawnmower blade balancer I can use (maybe). I have sharpened my fair share of blades, so I'm not afraid of a wee bit of grinding.

Re: DIY prop reconditioning?

I was a newbie boater last year and about half way through the season I, too, noticed some rough edges on the aluminum prop of my new boat. Nothing bad, but it looked like it could use a little help. Dremel tool and some black paint.

My son and I were on our way to a new lake (for us) and stopped at the dealer which was along the way. They took a good look at my handy work it and said it was fine. It never performed any different than when it was new. That is the real key.

If you notice any vibrations or anything else unusual while running it, then for sure I would take it in. But if it is just cosmetic, it might be okay to trim it up yourself and then have someone who knows better take a look at it.
