I have a Merc 200 (20 HP) older outboard (Early 70's). For this motor it was the first time out for me. I was on my way in, and Either jumped out of gear, or hub spun. I could had to be carefull due to 8mph speed limit. I did not get the chance to try it again. I looked at the prop, and it doesn't look to have a rubber hub. Is this possible?

That prop is very very likely to have a rubber hub. Especially if it does not have a shear pin. There were some solid hub props, but they were for racing.

My '58 Johnny had a rubber hub. It failed one day....

A perhaps common ailment on that approx year model is for the nut that attaches the lower unit above the prop pulls through the casting.

When this happens it allows a large amount of exhaust gasses to enter the wash right at the propeller blades, and will cause a cavitating slip.

On the motor I had, (after going through a bunch of props looking for the problem), was to fashion a stepped plug for the open area out of an old 3/8" drive socket and set it in place with a small dab of JB weld.
