hey everyone, so i got this boat from the u.s its a 93 glastron 175. i know it has a volvo sp drive. the motor is a 4.3 volvo as well, HOW EVER i cant find the model tag for the engine i'v looked everywhere, even with the camera, cleaned my glasses, looked again everywhere, all i can find on the motor is the actual casting of 4.3L in the engine block. Is there something that is distinctive to a certain model of 4.3L that i could find the model out that way? the only tag i can find it right in the back of the engine compartment...which i attached to this thread, im guessing that tag means nothing about the engine!

EH, anybody have any idears?IMGA0635.JPG

If the tag is still there, look back by the oil filter. It will probably be painted over and hard to see.

If the engine has been replaced with a reman longblock at some point, the installer may not have transferred it to the replacement engine.

so if that being the case how does one order parts for it if there is no information on the engine?

Volvo didn't make the engine -- the Chevrolet Division of General Motors did. So engine parts are available most anywhere car parts are sold. What you need to be careful of is that some parts are "marine engine-specific". This would include, alternator, distributor, starter, solenoid, core plugs, mechanical fuel pumps, head gaskets and the like. Otherwise the engine is basically light duty truck based. Truck based in that the camshaft is different in a truck engine than a car.

oh okay , but what about the differenceses between the models of the engine? would most 4.3 parts fit on each model of 4.3 for that year?

Being able to actually look at your engine and seeing what you have is the only way of determining what you have.
Since you have a basic idea of the year of your engine, by the year of the boat. (engine/drive year may not be the same as boat year.) The first thing you need to do is determine color. If red, it's a 93 or older, dark gray is 94 and newer. Exhaust manifolds change too.
Ignition systems, carbs etc, determine which model you have.
Assuming you have a 93 or older, it would be one of the 430 series, such as 430, 431, 432,434, etc, then there are A and B models.
Comparing what you have to part diagrams is one way of determining which one you actually have.
The OEM service manual can help also. here is a link to download the manual.
