Do Gooders and the Deer population

I heard on the news last night about suburbs around Cleveland. The deer population is exploding big time. The residents is not happy about sharpshooters taking them out. The residents is wanting to use contraceptives on the does. Now how lame brained idea is this. For one deer it will take approx 10 hours to catch and administer the drug. On top of that, they aren't even sure that it will work.

The residents don't want anyone to get hurt by the sharpshooters. They are affraid that someone is going to get hurt. I think people are getting hurt when the animal runs out in front of them while they are driving 70mph on the interstate. I guess they don't care about that. Sounds to me some people really don't think things out.

Some of the neighbors are getting into neighborhood scuffles because some allow the sharpshooters while the ones next to them are protesting it.

Contaceptives for deer, Geeesh, I think this country has more to worry about than that.

pjc, I think these people need to have at least one of these deer invited into their house through their front window for a visit. That has also been happening alot around here. A deer in the house will destroy it faster than a bunch of 5 year olds.

Read this in the October issue of Raghorn's Indiana Outdoor News. A drug aimed at managing deer populations has been placed on the shelf for good after failing tests in New Jersey and OHIO, reports the Star Ledger. Two dozen white-spotted fawns were spotted a few months in Princeton Township, NJ - all of which are offspring of female deer injected last year with the birth control vaccine SpayVac.

Re: Do Gooders and the Deer population

Let's see what we agree on.There are too many deer in the suburbs. Now let's see who's nuts. The people who do not want any shooting around the places where their pets and children play and live.(often less than 200 feet from houses)or the people who like to send in "sharp shooters" who often earned that title due to the fact that they belong to the local volunteer fire department and not because they are such great shots.
There is a simular problem here in the parks around where I live.In one park they tried the "bait and shoot" method whith partial succes.Ultimately it failed because to many wounded animals walked around for days and then they died in the wrong places and stunk up the neighborhood, attracting all sorts of varmin in the process.
Now their is a new program, that so far has caused zero protest and,at least until now, produced some good results.
It might be called "bait and medicate".
There are a number of feeding stations where corn laced with contraceptive drugs are offered to the deer.Although there are always new deer coming from the outlying areas bringing their fawns with them, between the contraceptives and natural attrition the numbers are definitely down.

When you sign up here you have to take a test before hunting, the police spot light the deer at night with a 22 mag with some sorta of silencer, the meet is either given way to who ever wants it and the rest goes to shetters in the big cities.

Re: Do Gooders and the Deer population

:) It did not work in New Jersey and that contraceptive concept is being shelved!!! I will write about that soon!!!!!

RonG
Here in Mass. there have been simular programs, which have originated from Cape Ann!! I was on a program for several years to reduce the deer herd, that grew out of control!!! It ended up being very sucessfull and this program is used through out the United States today!!!

We had an area that had an estimated 600 head of deer in an area known as Cranes Beach, which the land was suitable to hold only 60 deer!!! The Antis tried to put a stop to this hunt, which they were not able to do!!!! The area was closed to the public 2 days per week during the month long deer season and the roads leading into the Beach area were guarded during the days of the hunt!!!! no problems with the Antis because they could not penatrate the perimeter!!! To this day 20 years later the hunt still goes on to cull the herd and keep the deer at a sustainable number and healthy!!!!! A few years back another simular hunt took place known as the Quabin Reservoir where deer over populated the land area!!!! Was a very successfull hunt and still goes on year to year!!! ;)

Re: Do Gooders and the Deer population

Up here in Ontario Canada they have released Cougars with Gps tracking to control the deer population.Guy up by the Lake shot one of those Cougars as it liked his back yard.People taught he was nuts "no Cougars around here".He contacted the Ministry of Natural Resourses and they said they wanted it and he said sure if I get the skin.He has the skin and they have their tracker.Nice of them to keep these kind of secrets eh!!!  Out in the bush more predators against man really don't want us to know

:) "rolmops"!!! Hate to say it but you sound a little like an X-councilor that was very Anti hunter!!!! This councilor made in correct statements of deer pounches laying all over the ground around the reservoir!!!! She could not produce one picture of a pounch!!!!

So, let me ask you this, since your claim that "to many deer were wounded and walked around for days". Do you have any pictures of this????? and I would be very surprised that the people doing the shooting were not sharp shooters!!!! ;)

Hello Flyrod.I like eating venison and have absolutely no problem with you hunting if you want to.Just don't do it in my garden, just as you would not want strangers to trample your flower beds. And yes, wounded deer dying in the ditch behind your house do stink.

Re: Do Gooders and the Deer population

The local "bird sanctuary" has the same problem every few years. Their method to fix the problem is secretly called "Bows and Does" as they assume the public would not think much them killing the deer.

I particpated one year, and it was a lot of fun. We were all given a parcel to hunt and were to shoot the deer in route, to and from the santuary, it has worked well for them.

The Nature Center does the same thing only with guns, they close down for it, and give the meat to the mission.

I'm sure there are some isolated places in or around the city, something of this nature may work better, as long as it's kept fairly quite?

Re: Do Gooders and the Deer population

:) I agree with you 100% about not hunting in yourrrrrr garden if you do not wish people to do that!!! "BUT"!!!, a public garden or public property, does not just belong to you, it belongs to everybody to use depending on restrictions, if any!!!! You can use the phase,"My Gardern", and I could use the phase,"I Don't want anybody fishing in my Ocean" Aren't those phases rediculous???

And "YOU", evaded the question, Where is the photos and I will add, news clippings from the local paper stating that "WOUNDED deer were walking aimlessly and dropping dead on peoples property for days???????

Yes, deer do get hit by cars and lay in ditches and smell at differant times of the year!!!!
Does not seem to bother people in Pennsylvaina, where over 30,000 deer are hit by cars and lay on the side of the road and leave an imprint in the road from being there so long!! ;)

Wounded, dying deer laying in the ditch sink.....ah yes ...

Try a head shot next time rolmop...and search the web for some good field dressing, skinning and butchering technics. Then maybe you wont have that problem in your garden again. :)

Re: Do Gooders and the Deer population

Deer issues: ya that will start an arguement.. Have to agree with all ya.. Deer carry lice and anything else it can find, including mad cow. Killing the deer off though will bring Mountain lions in closer for food. So if you kill to many of the one the other will come in for a feast..
Nothing wrong with killing off afew deer.. But I hope the urbans(subards) don't complain when the big cats come-a-calling.. We have about 3 big cats in just our area. We leave them alone and they stay by the creeks, by the way they just love dogs and small cats, but deer, sheep and small cattle are a better feast..

Re: Do Gooders and the Deer population

In southern Ohio there is some small bobcats, but no lions or bears at this time. With the deer population exploding, it will start drawing in other preditors as well. Last years deer season totals was well over 250,000 bagged and tagged. That there is a lot of meat!

With thousands of acres of corn, you might as well say these deer are grain fed. Their population is greater now than any other records from the past show.

As for dead deer in the woods, this provides food for the unwanted pests that roam the neighborhoods. I prefer the rabid nusisances to stay in their own enviroment, not in my backyard.

As for my deer hunting, I cheat. I sit at my kitchen window and just wait. If I don't get em, my neighbor will. (Of course when season is in)

I'll bet if some Veterinarian offered free deer abortions, the do gooders would be all over that idea.
