Do I have a 70 or 90 HP mariner # B208848

I just picked up a Mariner and it is missing the cowling so I was wonering if I have a 70 or 90 hp. I bought the engine at a estate auction and they really didn't know the size. I checked the seial number but it didn't give me the year or size. It is a 3cyl. any help would be great!

Unfortunately its not that easy. The serial numbers for both the 70, 80, and 90 hp motors (and more) overlap.

It is a 1987 Motor.

Serial Number: 0B208848 Model Number: 7090727

To distinguish which horsepower it is (without any cowling decals to help) you need to look at the carb part number, or any other parts which may be different between the horsepowers.

For example,

70hp used WME-4 carbs
80hp used WME-1 carbs
90hp used WME-5 carbs

Visit mercurypartsexpress.com for component list breakdowns, and you'll see what other parts may be different.

Isn't the 90 hp a 6 cylinder?

But I do see where the 80 hp numbers crossover as well as the 70hp.

Went were I could because I am able .....

It was invoiced 04/23/1987 to an unspecified dealer.

No doubt it,s a 3 cylinder 90 HP Mariner long shaft power trim and tilt

(or it was when new)

Thanks guys. I am pretty sure its a 90 hp. from checking part numbers. why dont thy just put the year and hp on their motors?
