Okay, I thought i had a Us Mariner motor. However i think i am now wrong. There are stickers on the motor and boat that say "Us Marine" and then there is another sticker that says "Force" on the motor. I already purchased the Mercury book and i want to avoid getting the wrong book again. Will any book for a chrysler 1987 motor work for me?
BTW - its a 1987 Bayliner Capri.

thanks for the help

US Marine made Bayliner boats and hung Force motors on them. Definately not a Merc or Mariner. It's basically a Chrysler.

Your motor is a Force. US Marine bought the Chrysler boat motor group and renamed it to Force. US Marine was subsequently bought by Brunswick, which also owns Mercury.

Re: Do i have a Force Motor?

Force and Mariner were always distinct product lines, even though for a period of time they were both owned by the same company.

US Marine was the parent company for both Bayliner and Force when your boat was built, they had purchased the former Chrysler outboard factory a few years earlier. The US Marine assets were themselves purchased by Mercury's parent company, which also owned the Mariner product line, around (in?) 1990 and they continued to manufacture and sell Force outboards until the late 1990's.

Seloc makes a Force repair manual suitable for your motor, you can even order it through the iboats web site.

Depends on the part and the model year, newer motors used more Mercury parts.

I have a Seloc manual and have found some errors in it. Most posts that I have read state that Clymer is a better manual.

The Seloc manual that I have is for Force Motors from 84-99. It does not cover Mercs. I suspect Clymer is that way too.

Re: Do i have a Force Motor?

You have a Force motor made by USMarine.
Buy the manual printed by Clymer, for Force motors 1984-1999.

This manual covers all the Force motors made by both USMarine and by Mercury.

You can buy parts for your motor from :
any Mercury dealer
from Mercurypartsexpress web site
from some aftermarket sources including NAPA auto parts stores.
If you can figure out the part numbers, you can buy some of them from the iboats mall.

The mercruisersparts web site is a Mercury dealer, selling real Merc parts at about 10% cheaper than Mercury itself.

Some parts are no longer available from Mercury, but aftermarket replacements are available for most.
