Do I have Leaky elbows?

HI , I am new to the forums and to repairing IO drives, and boats in general. So I'd like to say hi.

I've recently aquired a '87 four winns horizon 190 with v6/175. The boat seems to be in good shape, has a 19p prop, will plane at 40mph on a calm lake, here in AZ. Starts well, looks like it has a rebuilt carb.

The previous owner said he had the outdrive impeller replaced, after his son started the boat out of water without the ears on. I am guessing this could cause an overheating condition??

I have noticed without the bilge pump running, there is a nasty leak. a quick inspection showed it coming from the "elbows" on the exhaust system.

You can see from the hard water here in AZ, where the leak is ( white calcification ). Am I right in thinking that when the impeller failed the exhaust temps may have damaged these rubber hoses, causing a leak?

Any help would be appreciated.

Also the coolant gauge is broken, where is the sensor located on this engine? is it a resistant type like on a chevy car?

Thanks in advance?

If it was for more than a minute or so, then you're also looking at Water Pocket Cover damage, which will lead to overheating at high speed until it's corrected.

You probably just need to take the boots off, give the inside surface a clean and tighten up the clamps.

Exactly the same as a car, yes. The resistance range is 33-240Ω. The temp sender is in the base of the thermostat housing, and if the thermostat has been replaced and the new gasket wasn't a genuine Merc gasket, the gauge stops working (lack of continuity)....

Re: Do I have Leaky elbows?

I would not assume that the impeller incident is also tied to the exhaust leak. Those things can happen independently. The exhaust needs to be fixed as there is not only water, but probably exhaust escaping.

The temp senders are usually on the front at the thermostat housing is located and many of the hoses join up. The engine is a GM engine in all likelihood, so, yes, it is like on a chevy.

You should get a maintenance manual for the engine, etc. That will help you learn about the engine.

Re: Do I have Leaky elbows?

Thanks Chris, I removed the elbows gave them a clean and re installed, tightening the clamps. checked on a four hour fishing trip, no water leaks and non had entered the bilge.

Also while I was in there I cleaned up the wiring for the bilge pump. Whomever installed it had used twist on connectors, and left the wires dangling into the bilge. So if it did fill up it would have shorted the pump fuse! I rerouted and soldered them, used wire shrinkwrap to keep the water out.

I am wondering if my thermostat does work, the lake where I go to is at 62Deg F, the gauge starts at 100Deg F, it uses raw water for cooling. Maybe its just too cool to register on the gauge.

Thanks for the advice.

Or maybe someone used a non-genuine gasket when they pulled the thermostat...

Re: Do I have Leaky elbows?

OK, about this thermostat body/temp sender, I am a little confused..

There doesn't appear to be any sender in the "housing" that the thermostat sits in..

http://www.marinepartsexpress.com/merc_sch_fs.html

There is a sender, it looks to be in the intake manifold? I am guessing there are a number of different designs for cooling.

Given that the sensor is not in the housing, how can it get a bad ground through an incorrect gasket? Even so wouldn't the cover bolts provide a ground?

I am not trying to be an ***, I just don't understand.
