Do I need a thrust bearing with this new prop?

I bought a new prop for my 74 Merc 850 and it came with a brass insert adapter that is used to hold onto the splines. This adapter that fits inside the new prop is a pretty healthy piece of brass. The designing of it looks like it serves as an adapter for the prop with an added thick front plate area that would act like a thrust bearing also. On the boat with the adapter, the prop looks like it fits correctly and the clearance between the prop and lower end housing looks correct also. My old prop had the thrust bearing, but again the old prop also had the splines as part of the prop as well. This new prop again has the beefy brass insert spline adapter with the additional added front plate area that seems to take the spot of a thrust bearing.
I have not tried yet, but it seems to me that if I used a thrust bearing with the adapter it would move the prop outward from the lower end housing. Thus givng it an abnormal gap between the prop and lower unit housing.

Thanks

Hey Don that looks close, but the thrust bearing that you have seperate in your photo was attached to the end of the other brass spline adapter laying there. As a one piece insert. It also did not come with that large black insert in your photo. Other then that, mine has a locking bolt in addition to the locking washer with bedable tabs.

Bond-o, you made me feel old for a second by my forgetfulness on showing more detail. I should of known to supply a photo right from the start, my apologies. I will take a photo of it today and repost so that there is no guessing or excesive threading.

Thanks to both...as Arnold would say," I'll be bock".

You need to post a picture as Bond-o mentioned. Nothing in that picture is a bearing. It would also help to know the manufacturer and part number of the prop you bought.

Re: Do I need a thrust bearing with this new prop?

Thanks all,
I went out and removed the prop a second time and it was like the parts Don had posted. The larger black adapter that Don's image showed was on my prop. I did not notice it was already present on the prop because of a lack of experience on my part. It looked like it was part of the prop the first time it was removed as well as the thrust bearing remaining stuck to prop making it look like it was part of the spline brass adapter. When I removed the prop the secong time today, the bearing fell off the end of the prop. After confirming that there was a bearing, I greased the inner area of the prop between the adapter and bearing and also between the bearing and the shaft seal on the lower end.
Another crime solved by just opening my eyes a little wider the second time. Thanks for responding everyone.

Ayuh,... It's the thrust Washer,... Not a Bearing, but thrust Washer, or thrust Hub...

No Bearings involved, at all...

Btw,... Glad ya figured it out,... ;)
