Do I need a USCG placard?

I bought a 25' boat, but I can't find a USCG placard on it. It seems that once you cross the 20' threshold you no longer need one. Can someone confirm this for me?

...I believe that any placard is an OEM requirement to certify the boat's dimensions, max weight capacity and persons on board capacity. All of this is included in the new boat's "Manufacturer's Statement of Origin to a Boat or Motor". Most states require this when issuing a registration to a boat. Then the registration contains all of this critical data. Registered capacity is normally displayed on the boat.

My placard is in the file cabinet under 'Larsen Boat'. My registration is in my glove box. Placards are owner safety info. Registration certs are for the water cops when they pull you over. ....So I hope the seller gave you a clear title and current registration. If so, you are golden.

Check with your state officials, or better yet, read your appropriate state laws regarding watercraft. In my state, up until a couple years ago, there was no requirement to have the capacity plate anywhere. That changed recently, this paragraph slipped into the code.

20.1-13-19. Display of labels evidencing compliance. The state game and fish department may require the display of seals, labels, plates, insignia, or other devices for the purpose of certifying or evidencing compliance with state or federal safety rules and standards for boats and associated equipment.

State, schmate. Federal law requires a Boat Capacity Plate for boats under 20' OAL. A Simple Google.
