Well per my earlier thread I was changing the bellows and gimball bearing when I found an exhaust shutter/flapper in the exhaust.

I saw mentioned a few times on here recently that some shutters were eliminated from the current Y-pipes, and Volvo doesn't use them anymore.

So... Do I really need it or is it just extra assurance? I have new exhaust bellow installed if that matters.

Oh yea and thru prop exhaust/

Re: Do I NEED Exhaust shutters?

Well this is a good question... I know cause I asked it 2 weeks ago... I went ahead and ordered some new ones for my rig even though I been running a good while without them... They are kinda expensive for what they are...

I would rather the engine start while out on the lake than have to deal with a breakdown cause I didn't install two parts(really 8 parts) that woulda prevented it... Digging spark plugs out of the engine while waves rock the boats sounds unfun to me..

Between looking for exhaust tubes instead of bellows, like the Mercruisers, and shutters like Volvo, I think you would be a lot better off if you payed attention to stuff about an OMC and gave up trying to do things like the other manufacturers.

My problem is a little different. I have a 1987 Citation Lazer with a 5.7 Mercruiser fitted with dual through hull exhausts. It spit the water shutters on start up after storage this year. Citation is no longer in business (1989 was their last year) and Mercury Marine/Mercruiser only claims responsibility for spec's, but will not help with sourcing. PPT and Corsa tried to help out, but could not. So, I have an old Mercruiser without shutters, and no hope of finding replacements. The size is the issue. The rubber flaps for the shutters are 3 5/8 inches at the hinge side, oval shaped and 4 1/8 inches from hinge side to tip. Nobody sells them. So, we'll see how this goes without shutters.

Wild, this topic has been inactive for 4.5 yrs.

Please.refrain from posting to inactive, 90days w/ no new posts, topics. Esp since you arent running the same I/O setup as the originator of this topic.

Post a new topic about running w/out shutters in your Mercruiser, if you'll update it w/ how well it goes w/out.

Thank you
