do I need timing?

I have an 80 hp mercury outboard. I got the boat this summer, and I have used it a few times. The engine runs good, but sometimes when I put it into gear it dies unless I put it into gear and slowly raise the throttle. Sometimes I get the smell of gas. I am just wondering if I need to adjust the low idle mixture screws, or does my engine need to be timed? What are the symptoms of a engine that needs correct timing?

I can't figure out if I my low idle adjustments are out of wack, or if I am needing to adjust the low idle mixtures to make up for bad timing.
