do I need to change thermostat

I have a 84 150 merc. the thermostat has not ever been changed,do I need to change it or leave alone

Personally, my philosophy is "if it ain't broke don't fix it". I'd say you don't need to change the stat. But I'd recommend putting an impeller in it if it hasn't been changed recently. Even if the motor isn't used much they will dry out and get hard. Impeller changes are cheap insurance.

It is not a hard job and after 22 years I'm amazed it's still good.

replace the t-stats cost $22.00 and about 20 mins. just replaced mine 85 merc150...i agree if you haven't replaced water pump also may be a good ideal...as stated before both are cheap insurance

FYI, A thermostat is always cheaper than a thermostat and a piston

Just to add to the above comment

In regards to the cooling system components, we here at iboats usually recommend replacing them every other season even when they are good because you never want to run the risk of a component failing. By the time you NEED a new tstat you'll be coughing up more than $22.00.

So I have this Chev v8. Was about 10 yrs old and figured it was time to change the stat.......was not having any problems with it!!!!!

Changed it out and very soon after was coming home from a fishing trip and my engine overheated.................new stat (bracket) broke and it couldn't open.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

I've finally started doing that and I am amazed at how few things I now have that break. 8)
