Do I need to disconnect the shift cable to remove the outdrive on an Alpha one?

I need to remove my outdrive and bell housing to do a complete transom seal and bellow replacement. I've watched some youtube videos that tell you to disconnect the shift cable first, and then some that just tell you to shift into forward gear. I would think you would need to completely disconnect it, right? How else would you replace the shift cable bellows. If I need to remove it to get to shift cable bellow, are there any instructions that I can find on the internet on disconnecting it? Better yet, are there any detailed instruction links on how to do the transom service?

No,just put the drive in forward gear before you remove it.

You're asking and people are answering two different questions... so you will be getting different answers.

In order to remove the outdrive, you simply put the drive in forward gear. For that you do not need to disconnect the shift cable.

In order to do the other work you describe, then yes, you do need to disconnect the shift cable from inside the boat. As Bond-o mentions, you ought to go ahead and simply replace the entire cable assembly at that point. Whatever you do, it will be easier to reinstall the cable if you tie a string to the end before you pull it out. It will help show how the new cable needs to be fed through and routed.

Ok thanks for the replies. I've read a little more since posting. I do not have the tools to remove the bell housing, so I just want to remove the outdrive for right now so that I can clean it up and maybe repaint. Thats the reason for the two questions. I've got the hinge pin removal tool on order, so for now I'll wait on removing the shift cable.

Should do the impeller while you have it off, then you will not have to mess around with it when you do the other stuff.

By the way.... "it" (singular) is called a "bellows". To "bellow" is "to emit a hollow, loud, animal cry, as a bull or a cow" which is what some people do when they are changing their bellows! :D

+1 on that kt... I emitted a "bellow" or two while changing my bellows. Putting that new water supply hose on was a serious PITA!

To the OP, in order to remove the shift cable you'll also need a special thin walled socket to unscrew it from the bell housing. They're all over on ebay for a few bucks - search for "shift cable tool". I agree that if you're going to all the work of replacing the bellows it makes sense to go ahead and do the shift cable while you're at it.

I have found a deep well 12 point Craftsman 3/8" drive socket fits. Years ago I made my own tool by welding another socket on the end of my craftsman deep well socket. Since then I have discovered that the plastic guide simply screws out and you can use a regular deep well socket - as long as the walls are thin enough, and the Craftsman 12 point is.
