I'm currently undergoing reno's on my late 60's(?) Starcraft falcon. I was fully committed to replacing the transom when I discovered that I would be more work that I thought, or I'd I am able to do it with my skillset. Parts of the transom have peeled, and some turned to tiny chips but where to motor rests, it seems fairly intact. have a 50hp that was going to attach to it, which is 10hp more than the rating.
I am debating just putting a 1/2" peice of plywood where to motor rests to help stabilize it a little instead of replacing the transom. Thoughts on this?

I thought the same thing, the transom felt solid, but once I got in there, it was wet flakes. It's a lot of work but does not require a lot of skill. I had/have zero boat knowledge, but enough folks here help out to make it possible. I just finished pulling out my transom, I'm glad I did. When you put wood back in the transom, use epoxy to seal it. It will be safer and motor will respond better. Look on Youtube videos for transoms that fail and drop the motor.
