Do I need to register our inflatable in CA?

We plan to use it soon on Lake Shasta

It is an Intex Excursion 5 and it will be running a Minn Kota 55# thrust trolling motor

I am still unclear on this....

I am trying to figure out why it needs to be registered, and what all I need.....

It is an inflatable boat, but will have an electric trolling motor....

what is the part about being US Coast Guard registered?

It does have a serial number on it, that was half written with what appears to be a permanent marker, the rest of it is printed on the boat itself

I will try and post the number later, as I am not sure if I am reading it correctly and don't want to put the wrong number.....

looking into it, I will need to get a certificate of origin from the mfr..... Welcome to Intex Recreation

just trying to get all the terminology straight

Ayuh,.... In many states, any watercraft powered by anything more than people power is required to be registered...

ok, i can understand that...

but what about it saying I have to attach numbers to it, and vertically, and all of that?

also, looking at that form, there is an inflatable box, but then it asks about motor, is a trolling motor an outboard?

what about fuel type? battery?

the builder? would be intex?

for hull material? other? as it isn't fiberglass, or metal, or wood.....

I surely can't turn in a half completed form.....


also, it looks like we bought it in 2008 or 2009.... I actually have no idea when we got it, other than it was about the time I joined this site.... I don't even remember the purchase cost, or have the receipt of it anymore [both sections on the form that are to be completed]...... does this mean I am going to get hit with all sorts of late penalties for not registering it?

For the cost and hassle of registering a vinyl raft...I would just bring oars. And seriously would anyone give you a hassle on Shasta if you snuck in a little SLA battery and tiny Mini Kota? It's bureaucracy gone wild in my eyes for something that is so under the radar.

Yes they will write a ticket. Search the web if you don't believe me. Shasta Lake has some of the strictest police officers I have ever had to deal with (Although polite).

OP it needs to be registered because the government says it does. I posted the link for the CA DMV that confirms it needs to be registered. The Coast Guard will make sure you carry lifejackets for all aboard, and otherwise do not have anything to do with registration purposes, well other than making sure it is registered. The sheriffs at the lake will check for lifejackets too.

The registration numbers must be displayed on the side of the boat towards the bow horizontally. They must not be on a board, but permanently attached to the boat. Most use a paint or marker pen. They make special stencils and paints available at places like West Marine. The stickers must also be attached directly to the boat. They will want to peel off. I had to put special sticker mounts on my boat to keep them in place after losing a couple of stickers.

You pretty much answered all your own questions of what to list it as.

There won't be any back registration, and you already paid taxes when you purchased it.
