Do I need to remove Volvo Penta 225E and 275 outboard to look at transom?

Hello all,

Got a 1986 19 foot bayliner capri, with a Volvo Penta 225e (Looks like a GM 5 liter) and a 275 outboard. I had a crackling floor above the gas tank, so I ripped out the floor, and it seems to be isolated only to the floor. There was no water protection on the bottom of the foor above the gas tank. The stringers and foam is relatively dry. Anyways, after doing a bunch of research and seeing the "quality" of bayliners work first hand, I am worried the transom is ruined. Do I need to pull the engine and remove the outboard fully to check the transom? If so, do I need to remove the "cap" to remove the engine? The engine seems quite large, I was thinking of building one of those wood hoists with two As on each side, but I am worried it may not be strong enough, has anybody done it before with this engine?

Thanks.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,..... Ya oughta be able to pull the motor, without poppin' the cap off,....

At worst, ya might have to pull some parts to make it smaller,....
A little hot-rod boat in the fleet I maintain is a Slickcraft 195, with a SBC in it,...
I have to do the manifolds in the hull, then pull the motor, while turnin' it 90? to get it outa the hatch,....

The Full dress motor oughta run just under 1000 lbs,....

You should be able to pull the engine without issue.

If the stringers are in good shape you should be able to take a scewdriver around the drain plug of the transom and get a decent idea of what shape it's in. On these boats, stringers are indicative of transom health, so if those are good in all likely hood the transom is too. That said, the boat is a 1986 and you're due for new PDS bearings in that drive, which does require the engine to come out.

The drive does not mount to the transom like an OMC or a Merc - you should be able to pull the upper transmission box, U joints, and bellows off the transom without removing the entire drive.

Highly recommend you swing over to Bayliner Owners Club (baylinerownersclub.org) for further help here. We've done all of this and then some, and have plenty of knowledge to share.
