Do I need to report this to the police?

I was just sitting in a deserted and dark Wendy's parking lot eating a cheeseburger in my truck. I had the radio on so I couldn't hear very well. I heard a click like my door handle makes and then was startled to see a guy standing outside my window. He tried to open the door but it was locked. Then he knocked on the window. I could see about a 4" long pocket knife in his hand, unfolded.

My truck was still idling so I floored it out of there over the curb. I had $1000 cash in the glovebox and I don't think he wanted to say hi.

Do I need to report this to the police?? Nobody was hurt and nothing got taken. I don't think he did anything specifically illegal, though I'm sure he would have if I have him a chance. I don't think I could describe him.

It couldn't hurt.. The police will at least know there is someone in that area doing this.. There may have been another besides yours.. But you did the right thing, got the hek out of there... You may not be talking to us now.. Its getting winter and all the thieves are out looking for easy targets..
So you were very lucky...

A stranger, in a darkened carpark & holding a 4" knife, attempts to enter your vehicle uninvited - sounds to me like he was collecting for the redcross  .

Yep, tell the cops. His next victim may not have the foresight to lock their doors.

Didn't think about cameras...I bet Wendy's has one out there. (though it was pretty dark) I guess I'll talk to the police tomarrow morning. Should I just go down to the station? I don't think I even know where the police station is in that town...

I always keep my doors locked at night. Several years ago my mom was stopped at a light and some guy with a gun jumped in her car. He made her drive him around until they stopped for something and he leaned out of the car to tie his shoe. She floored it and he fell out. That guy is in prison now because he killed 5 people the same way.

He may have left finger prints on the handle or the side of the truck.. You'd be surpised what things you remember: nose, teethe, skin tone, fingers, knife, Dark clothing, labels on clothes, tattoes on fingers, zippered sweatshirt. Metal zippers or plastic.. Eye color, eyes large, small, or bloodshot. The police have a better ways of helping extracting a profile.. Who knows someone may have seen him in the area..
All the advice is good...

Did you take too many napkins and it was the Wendy's manager?

(thought a *little* humor wouldn't be too rude)

As for the police, HECK YA, I thought of fingerprints too.

You think these people are waiting for a bus, but they are looking for they're next targets.. Some guy did that in the Portland area, with me. I locked the door just intime, so he couldn't get in.. He even yelled at me to open it up. I showed him my gun to his knife, he called me some names and banged on my car.. I was shaking so bad by the time I got to the store..That must have been very scary for your mom...

Nope, they gave me 1 napkin with a drippy burger just like always. :p

Now when someone asks me why I need a big block V8 I can say it's just for safety. Gotta make a quick get away. :D

I'll try and keep my hands off the handle for fingerprints.

Hmmm, maybe you went the wrong way. Reverse with the wheels cranked would have taken him out. :)

Aw come on OZ, he was just trick or treating and it probably was a rubber knife. Geez, talk about over reacting.

Good thing you acted quickly.
Next thing could have been a brick thru the window to get at you.

Re: Do I need to report this to the police?

dang, i guess the LEO's here haven't replied because either they're out on patrol, or they hear this all the time...

i'd say report it. every early detail may help prevent a future occurance, and at least give them a head's up on the locations. man that's a situation we all may encounter. i've been there but it was during the teenage years selling snowcones, and never reported it. nowadays you can see what every little detail may help the LEO's. good thing you were locked up. good luck man, just remember to always be in the preventive mode. and never underestimate the situation. :)

I can't believe you're even asking this forum!!!
Hell yes call the police!!! And don't delay, do it right now!!! Don't wait until tomorrow...they may find him tonight based on your description of him and what he was wearing.

Give them all the information you can. It may help them catch this guy and prevent him from harming someone else.

Why in the world would you think otherwise???

Re: Do I need to report this to the police?

I would. They probably won't get too excited about it and will leave you feeling like it was worthless to report, BUT maybe they have caught this person robbing someone else and this would tie in to close the book. It is also possible that there is a rash of this in this area, either way it will give more charges and give a history of attempted robbery to this subject. Probably won't help you at all, but may make all the difference in another criminal case if he is ever caught.

Definetly report it. Its the little things like this that break a lot of cases for us. Law and Order is nice, so is CSI. Truth is most LE work is not that way. Reports like yours, and snitches, is how it usually is.

Report it. Report it. Report it. He didn't get to you but the wife and mother of two he tries it on next might not be so lucky to have her doors locked. Your report may stop him before that.

I agree with DepDog, expect to be let down, but realize you might help with another case.

Ken
