Do I need to tie down the outdrive when towing. I have a 1984 merc I/O When I'm towing it I sometimes notice the wheel moving if turning corners will this hurt the outdrive or steering?

Re: Do I need to Tie down outdrinve

I've seen numerous threads on here about this topic. I don't recall it being answered definitively though.

But right or wrong, what I do is actually run a ratchet strap from my ski ring on the top center of the transom around the drive and back up. It does the dual purpose of preventing the drive from swinging, and also on the very outside chance that a trim/tilt cylinder or hose fails it'll keep my drive from smacking the highway when towing.

When I had my old Crestliner with a 115 Johnson O/B, I did just the opposite, I strapped it down to the ski harness rings at the lower outside edges of the transom, because no matter what I did the motor would not latch to the trailering arm.

I don't trailer without transport clips. I don't know about side-side movement though. It wouldn't hurt anything to secure it.
