Do it yourself transom.....worth it???

I have an '84 Mailbu Sling Shot 550 bassboat that was given to me by my Dad. It looks and runs great, but the areas in the transom around 3 of the 4 motor bolts have cracked on the inside. (One of the bolts pulled through the inside skin.) I consider it unsafe at this point to use.

Seems like there is a little rot in there (used the tapping test to identify probably rot) and hitting bottom a few times lately has put too much stress on already weakend area.

I would consider myself average when it comes to repair work of any sort. I have used fiberglass sucessfully once before in my life, but it was very basic work. I have read through post after post here about people doing their own transom work, so I have a general knowledge of the concept of the repair.

So finally, here's my question. For all you "normal" guys that tackled this project. Was it worth doing yourself? If it happend again, would you have a pro do it? I was quoted anywhere from $1200 to $1800 for this repair and I would expect that it will look almost new when completed.

thanks!

For all you "normal" guys that tackled this project.

#1),.....Well,...... I've Never been Accused of,... Nor have I Ever Claimed to be "Normal"...........
Was it worth doing yourself?

#2),.... Do you mean there IS another way,..??..??

If it happend again, would you have a pro do it? I was quoted anywhere from $1200 to $1800 for this repair and I would expect that it will look almost new when completed.

#3),.... I think your Expectations might be alittle High,......

Most "Repairs" of this nature,.... Usually either look like Repairs,.......
Or,........
Are Much Better than New.............

I usually shoot for the Later choice Myself.............................;)

i think you need to consider the seacast method, it sure seems to be a lot easier. Gary H is the latest to finish his tramsom. requires a little more digging the wood out. but far less glass work, and won't rot. google seacast.
