Re: Do you get POed at sports games

I could of told you Astros fans this would happen......Phil Garner sux. he did with the Brewers, still does.

Yeah its immature we can all agree on that, but passion for the game is a great thing. The moments of insanity are just that, moments.

I'm a little miffed about staying up until 1:20 just to see 'em lose. What happened there in the ninth after Burke stole third - don't y'all know that AL teams never, I mean never, see a squeeze play?

[Note to QC: The Gibson homer is a metaphor for all that is good and decent and right about America. I envy you and everyone else in the stands that day.]

Yup, I get chills to this day (gettin' chills while I type) everytime I think about it. The coolest thing was that nobody would leave. They had to kick 50,000 people out and the party went on all of the way out to the freeways. There were people on their porches waving American flags as we all made our way through the Chavez Ravine neighborhood.

Re: Do you get POed at sports games

I once threw a Playstation controller. I was playing the computer in NBA basketball and got POed when my guy couldn't make any shots. I think that counts as a sports game. :) It's a sad statement about my issues of self-control though.

Pony, all I can say now is, REG-GIE BUSH, REG-GIE BUSH! Wouldn't he be a nice addition to the Pack attack!

Whoops. Throwing doesn't really indicate what happened. In actuality, I hurled it across the room and it basically shattered when it hit the wall.
:D

I can be successful in life without ever watching a sporting event, thank you very much. In my opinion most professional athletes are overpaid, illiterate college drop outs (but they got a free scholarship). If you are "kicking and throwing stuff" in your house while watching football, you need to take anger management and fill up your prescription of Ritalin. How about those dumb a$$ jocks who tortured me during high school because I wasn't very athletic? Last one I saw was bagging groceries. :D Apparently 1/2 the people that took the survey agree me. Enough said.

Of course it is immature to throw a tantrum over a sporting event. After all, it is only a game.

Ditto. It's a GAME!

Thats fine. You're right you can be successful without watching sports, and half the people who responded in poll for did agree with you. By the same token, however, half the people did not agree with you. I agree that professional sports lacks professionalism and most of them are overpaid, and most of them did get a free ride to college. That being said you can't dispute the good in having a passion for sports. Sports at an early age gives youths a chance to be part of team, and teaches values like trust and perseverance. Those values will help one suceed in life whether you like to admit it or not.

I "kick and throw" stuff not because I need anger management or Ritalin, but rather because I ave such a passion for that particular sport or team. Dont go trying to tell me thats a bad thing to have either, cuz it most certainly is not. I share that passion with my dad, and that is important to me. The few memories he has of his father are them watching a Packer game. So what if we are passionate about it. You can say its a game all you want, because it is......but dont try to insult my intelligence by saying its stupid for me to get upset by a loss. You may not understand it, but there is such a desire to have that team win when you share the liking of that team with the people around you, that you may get upset for a min. Its not like it lasts for days and days. I for one will continue to watch football with my dad and we will yell at the tv with him and yell when they lose......but we will do it together, and we will always have the memories of it. I may have babbled a bit, but a sunday packer game with my dad is about the most important thing in my life right now. not because i need anger management or whatever, but because he has been recently diagnosed with cancer and quite frankly i love it when me and him are sitting watching a game yelling at the tv and discussing why we are mad and what is going on.

Re: Do you get POed at sports games

Pony:

I certainly don't have a problem with having a passion, especially one that you and your Dad can share. I'm sorry to hear that your Dad is sick.

I don't hate sports...I've been known to watch an occasional game or go up to the Dome to watch Syracuse play once in a while.

My real issue is the emphasis put on us at an early age to play sports (rather than Music, Art, Math or Science) and the mentality that goes with it. Well I was a tall skinny kid in high school who barely weighed 130 pounds...sorry but I wasn't very athletic.

You say sports at an early age gives youths a chance to be part of a team, and teaches values like trust and perseverance. Ok...maybe...but it also teaches arrogance, self centeredness and discrimination. Trust me...I know. My self-esteem sucked for many years. Exuse me for not running home to catch the game on TV.

I guess I'm just tired of being looked at funny if I don't participate in this years Superbowl or NCAA pool at work. I'm sick of listening to the arrogant guy in the break room who yells at his kid's football coach. You know what...it's just a game...grow up!

But hey...if you don't mind replacing the occasional xbox controller after you wing it across the room...more power to you.

I'm not trying to change your mind and I respect your oppinion. However, I'm also allowed to express mine.

Re: Do you get POed at sports games

I was discouraged from playing any sports by my mom . . . :( One of my only beefs with her. I am a good athlete, but I didn't know it. I think it teaches kids about failure and perseverance most of all. Sometimes too much either way, but on balance, good nonetheless.

Re: Do you get POed at sports games

LOL!! yea, I admit... I've had a few words to that fish that got away!

You hit it right on the head BRG25 !!! You couldn't have said it any better!

I wasn't beat up or be-littled by the jocks in school, however I also had the pressure to play sports. I absolutely HATED it, and will never do that to my kids.
Even today, just about everyone 'assumes' a guy likes to watch football... Well guess what... not all of us do!

Nothing makes me more sick than to see a parent pressure their kids so hard to play sports.
You know the kind I'm talking about....
Let the kid be a kid for cripes sake. Don't shove sports down their throat (or anything for that matter) Let them choose.

I too did just fine in life without playing sports.

Perhaps someday we can get athletes back that a kid can actually look up to as a role model without having to see them busted for drugs, murder, this or that...or the other.

How much does it cost an average family to go to a ball game these days? How many millions do these athletes make every year? Now compare that to someone that dedicates their life to helping others like a brain surgeon or doctor.

'Nuff said!

H.

Re: Do you get POed at sports games

BRG25- I didnt make this very clear in my post as emotions ran high when they maybe shouldnt have. I respect your opinion are you have every right to express it. I'm not going to lie, there are a lot of things that are wrong with sports on every level, from t-ball to pro football.

In the end its all about money. Trust me, I wish they would put more money into the arts and sciences etc. The same life lessons and values can be found in those things as well.

I know you arent trying to change my mind, and likewise I'm not trying to change yours. For the record I dont look at people funny just because they arent in to sports. Thats their choice, just as I choose to watch and be passionate about them. You bring up a very valid point about parents. Acting in the arrogant ways you describe isnt what I consider sport, and it takes everything good that sports can be away. Its a shame really and it gets me POed more than anything, to see a kid be turned off of sports because of stuff like that or because of teasing.

The Xbox controller thing. I should explain 1/2 were broken during non sports games and not all of them were broken directly by me,

I hear you Pony. I shouldn't group everyone who is passionate about sports into one category...I know better than that. Just carrying around some childhood baggage I guess. Hey...you gotta do something while the boat is winterized right? :D Take care.

Brian
