Lenny Bruce was funny some of the time. The rest of the time he was vulgar and profane. He defied social and moral standards until he committed career suicide.

Interesting comparison.

rolmps
In the early 80's my two favorite comedians where Buddy Hackett $ Edie Murphy.. Only having a TV Antenna with no Cable I had never seen them on cable. One night comming home at 10PM from Bass fishing we were cleaning fish and both were on Vegas Live.. "F" this and "F" that just wasn't funney... I have never watched either of them again. you dont have to be gross or vulgar to be funny!
IMHO :)

Went to see trashy mouth Joan Rivers. What a mistake. All that I paid for was vulgarity. I don't see where the "F" word is that entertaining

Re: Do you remember Lenny Bruce?

Lenny Bruce may not have been the funniest comedian, but his being so volgar opened so many doors for other comedians like George Carlin and Richard Pryor.

If it wasn't for Lenny, I don't think Carlin would have been a sucess, I mean it was the "7 Dirty Words You Can't Say on TV" that made him, and I think he would have had a hard time selling that shtick, hadn't Lenny opened the door.

Richard Pryor had it a little easier than Carlin, but not much, and I don't think he would have been as successful either, but both George and Richard were and are funny because of their volgarity, but didn't quite reach the level of volgarity as Lenny did, which allowed them to be successful.

Just my opinion.

I laugh at all three!

Hello Again.
I liked Lenny until his act became an excuse to curse in public. That's when it stopped being funny.
I was just trying to see if I could fool any moderators here and J.B. caught on the first second,so no I could not fool you,and you retorted in a splendid way. Maybe Ray is honoured too much by comparing him to Lenny.
Mops

I for one miss Ray's company. It would be a riot to have a beer with him I bet.. :) I like to read his posts and he keeps me laughing and thinking at the same time. His and others cander and stories is one of the reasons I keep coming back to this site. As far as vulgar goes...I see more of it on my cable-free TV. Theres alot of you guys and gals here that crack me up...... :) If we all agreed on everything and were perfect saints I dont think it would be very interesting.

Wit, like lighting, is polarizing

Those with a sense of humor, tend to laugh

Those unfortunate souls that lack the mentality to comprehend, OR are so anal compulsive about their perceived image (or sense of political correctness) that they could not laugh at anything

Sad state of affairs

Lenny Bruce had a critical failure - lots of brass, but not creative, not adaptive

That being said, 40 years later, hes still remembered

And he had the STONES to STAND UP FOR WHAT HE BELIEVED IN .. which was freedom of speech

(one consequence of that was (C)rap music, so swings the double edged sword)

Remember this - at the end of your life, when you look back at what you have done with the time allotted, you will regret NOTHING you have done in life so much as that which you DID NOT do.

Think about it
