Re: Do you remember?

Good Post, JB. Yes, indeed, there were lots of good things about those days, and lots of things that were not so good.
And a whole lot fewer people, which makes a big difference.

But I do remember the big football games and the obligatory fight at ****'s Drive-In after each one. Until, of course, someone got the bright idea to bring tire irons and links of chain and the like to the party, which is when I decided to no longer participate in the fun.

I remember in high school debate class, we were given the assignment of arguing whether people were more or less happy 50 years ago than they are today. There was no consensus, as I suspect it would have the same result today.

Except if you asked my kids, of course, who really think that it was their generation that invented fun.

Re: Do you remember?

Kenny, the 45's replaced the 78's, then the 33's tookover. The 78's had lousey sound quality, but it beat the hell out of the cylinders, that they replaced. Always something better coming along to make all of your old stuff obsolete. Cylinders, 78's, 45's, 33's, then tapes, and now cd's, what do you suppose the next generation will be? By the way Kenny, the 78's were pre WWII, and the 45's came along after WWII. My aunt had one of the old timey (BL= before lakeman) cylinder outfits we were able to listen to on special occaisions, they used a wax cylinder that was about two inches in diameter, and about three inches long if I remember correctly, with no speaker as we know them now, the large machine had a wooden horn on it, and no electric motor, you wound it up. Then there were the piano rolls, rolls of paper with holes punched that were inserted into the old timey (rink-a-tink) pianos, and they played music automatically. :D :D

Hey lakeman,

Do you think they will ever bring back 8-Track tapes?

They were great.

They would just keep playing over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, until you ejected the tape.

Kenny

Re: Do you remember?

guess I am an old 41, I remember all that stuff

78's cracked against the walls and shattered way better than 33's

and coffee pot cords hurt way more than belts

I was a fat kid, I missed out on everything young - the making out, the drive ins, dances, sub races, walking hand in hand, hickeys, adventures under the boardwalk, etc etc etc

learned that fishing was a sport I could excel in

that a dog was a better friend than most humans, and fur will tell on your tears, your dog will only love you

I learned people judge you based on how you look, they do not look inside

that its better to make them laugh with you than at you

that if you ask the prettiest girl in school to go to the canteen, she will laugh and say I wouldnt go out with you if you were the last man on earth

I learned that if that is said to you, you will indeed remember october 22 1975 as if it were yesterday ... it was a wednesday, the dance was on friday

however

I discovered via this lovely box of wires that perspectives change with years, and if someone sees you as you are before they see you, they simply love you for YOU - of course, the peer group changed, and the world got a bit bigger, fat is somewhat in now

My mom is still alive, and knows Im loved ... by someone other than her, that is something I suspect was terribly important to her

most importantly ... you find the strength that carried you through the horrors of so called golden years still lives within you, and you only get stronger, never giving up, always holding dear the certain fact that things will get better, they have to get better

but then you see your adoptive daughter hiding tears, a fat kid with a mom that spent her life skinny, beautiful ... stretch marks came with giving birth, not living life

how do you teach her what youve learned along the way, without making her learn all of it the hard way? How do you teach strength learned in the crucible of your own hell, to rescue her from hers?

Ive got to learn to go to sleep when Im tired, this is so **** dark, and Im best at bringing a laugh ... emoting without the humorous shield aint good, sorry gang

Ray, you point out why places like iboats and SBN's chatroom is among the best things in our time. Carried by the web, another great invention, we are able to enjoy this virtual community :)

Re: Do you remember?

I remember when our "rich" neighbors were the first on our block to get a television set. Old Henry's folks would have to throw us out every evening. I remember all of the things described here... make a feller like me feel a little ancient :)

Remember playing baseball without "little league parents", or adult supervision for that point. Just kids enjoying the game.

Re: Do you remember?

I remember the first TV on the block (the only other ones we had seen were in store windows). The neighbors (had 4 kids) four doors down, had it. The oldest son was a genius in electronics, and worked in a radio repair shop after school. and his father ran the corner gas station (nothing like the fill-um-ups of today) Where all the neighborhood younguns hung out. We would all go down to their house every evening, and watch wrestling from chicago (90 miles away) because that was all that was on. it was a big heavy (about 500 lbs) TV, about 3' wide, by 3' thick, by 4' tall, with a little 3" screen, that was blurry black and white, that you had to have a completely darkened room to watch it from about three feet away. It was VHF only (UHF was not invented yet), and everytime an airplane went over, an automobile started, or went by the house, or a person in the room moved, it blanked out. Hey we loved it, because all we had ever had was lousey AM radio (FM had been invented, but there was only one station), and it was expensive, and you needed a great big outdoor antannae, Yes we all had TV (as it was), long before we had FM radio. About 50% of the time, you could not get anything at all fit to watch on the big monster, and half of the time that you could, we would be watching, and it would go out and we would all have to grab this monster, and move it around the room, and sometimes horse it up the stairs to be able to watch the terrible image on it. At that time, many people spent the evening by going downtown (walking) and all gathering in front of the applience store (often a western auto) in a big crowd, watching the TV displayed there. Every saturday night, there would be a "big crowd" there (every evening there would always be a smaller crowd), complete familys pushing, and struggling for a good place up front. Hey, today they claim kids don't have anything to do, ha, ha, hariity, har, har. OH!! by the way, a few years later when TV became more developed, and and everyone (except welfare ricipiants that were not allowed to have an Auto, Phone, or TV) had one, every preacher in town was preaching about how sinfull it was, and everyone was going to go to hell for watching it. Ha, ha, ha, ha, what would they think if they seen the trash on it today?? Oh boy, elaborating on one old remembrance, brings up another. In another post, I will tell about one of the most important inventions, with a terrific impact, that came along about the same time, as the TV, can anyone guess what it was??? :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
