WHEN BACKING UP A STEEP GRADE , GRAVITY IS IN WORK, DUE TO THE WEIGHT BEEING PULLED WHILE YOU ARE PUSHING IT UP . WHEN GOING DOWN THE ROAD THE SURG DOSENT ACTIVATE UNTIL YOU START SLOWING DOWN , THEREFOR THE TRUCK SLOWS DOWN THE SURGE STARTS TO ACTIVATE DUE TO THE WEIGHT OF BOAT ANd TRAIler now pushing on the truck in which is applying the trailer brakes. so backing up hill will be tricky. without lock out key to back up .

You can also install a bypass solenoid that will redirect the hydraulic fluid pressure back to the master cylinder when activated. It's wired via a 5th blue wire to your back-up lights. When activated, the brakes are rendered disabled so they don't lock up when you're reversing.

the previous owner of my setup had a new brake system installed on the trailer. it has the backup solenoid which works excellent but he also had them install a quick disconnect in the brake line before it splits off to the wheels. if the solenoid ever fails all i have to do is pop the quick disconnect to back up.
