I don't know what happened, my guess is the head gasket leaked. The motor ran fine in a bucket but out in the water it ran for like 30 seconds, I was at full throttle and it felt like it was producing half power then a sudden pop and steam came out from under the lid.

What do you guys think? Do not resuscitate?

I don't know how the bearings managed to fuse together like that. Maybe this was more than just water leaking into the cylinders, maybe I assembled the bearing wrong?

What oil and what ratio were you using? Heads and gaskets are hard to blame for a rod failure

Castrol super outboard motor oil @ 50:1.

I think I assembled it wrong, I had difficulty getting those sheet metal bearing parts to match. I'm also just now finding out that johnson marked matching rods and caps; I think I mixed up the 4 pairs I had.

What year and HP?

The Block is blue, that leans toward Evinrude

Sheet metal bearing parts? Did this engine have needle and roller bearings on the crank and rods?

all 9.5 used 50:1. The pic is worth a thousand words. The bearing wasn't able to move. Mismatch of parts or incorrect assembly

I just got a really stupid idea; this power head is dead no matter how you look at it, I will have to throw it out any ways, so why not try and make it work again. I have a crank case cover from another head, I can punch out the alignment pins and try to manually align it. I have extra needle bearings, sleeves and piston rods.

I'm thinking I should be able to get one or two uses at low power before the ruined journal grinds to a halt again.

Cover and block are a matched set.

Yeah.. I just put everything to the curb. This motor was a bad deal from day one, never ran properly even before I opened it up, but a good learning experience. Next time I will test before buying instead of meeting in a mcdonalds parking lot.
