Well I have been trying to solve my knock, bog, sput electrical problem for a while (tach goes crazy) but only have time every once in a while. Was reading today and found this thread. It is about a merc 4.3 but does my VP have the same switch, cause it is exactly what I am having as a problem.

Please let me know as I will be the happiest person ever, any part number would be appreciated. Also if anyone has the oem or service manual in pdf form it would be greatly appreciated. I love this site, all you wizards are amazing.

No shift interrupter switch on Volvos.

Disconnect your tach. It may be causing your problems.

Is there anything else that could be causing it? Or what part does this same task in the VP's? I thought I had found the solution  It was he was reading my mind when he wrote his response to what was happening.

Volvos don't have a dog clutch so not needed.

I also have the problem where I use the tilt trim at WOT and it will cause the Tach to jump and also the engine to sputter or misfire. The more I write about this seams that there is a bad ground that can't hold the power draw from the tilt trim motor and causes that.

Does anyone have any views on this, I will post my solution once I find it.

Thanks

If your tilt motor is causing a sputter, you have either a bad ground or a bad +12V connection but I am going to bet more on the +12V connection. The reason is that the same ground for your ignition is also used by your starter. What I would do first is take off all of the cables down at your starter and clean them to bare metal and reinstall and see if that solves your problem. The main power feed to everything is right there.
