On of my friends inherrited an old outboard, a 18 HP 2 cyl 2stroke Perkins Outboard. From the design it looks to be somewhere in sixties. Front of cowling looks like a Homelite. This motor has VERY low hours. The paint on tiller trottle gears are barely worn off in small scratches !!!. However someone without knowledge has messed with it. The lower spark plug has been overturqued and it needs a helicoil. There has been water in lower unit, as someone probably changed the impeller and not replaced the shift rod gasket !! A 3/4" retainernut and gasket around the shiftrod misses. A ball bearing in lower unit is done, gears and rest of bearings look spotless. Water pump looks brand new, as rest of motor. Will it be possible to get the seal and hardward for the shift rod ?? Does anyone know it ??

Re: Does Anybody know a Perkins Outboard

Hello Dane.
Here is their history.
For a long time Criscraft made their own outboards.
In the late forties ,early fifties, criscraft bought some engineers away from Mercury and they started designing criscraft racing engines which looked a bit too much like mercury designs.A threat of lawsuit followed, and criscraft decided to drop the outboard business.A few months later the Oliver agricultural equipment company appeared on the scene with a line of what used to be criscraft outboards. This was 1953.
In order to succesfully compete, they signed a contract with Perkins in England to produce the engines there. This was 1959.Soon after The Oliver interest dissapeared.Perkins sold out a few years later to another british company( Hillman, Humber)and finally it ended up in the "British Anzani Engineering Company" but they stopped production in the mid sixties.
I found this by going google and searching for "perkins outboard".
It came up with a few sites and one was a "cyber museum" with a lot of info on these engines including pictures.
Hope this helps you.
