Does any one have any suggestions on how to clean out the circulation passges on the heads. I have a 175 merc 89 model. And it's still over heating and we have done everything we can but to no avail. If anyone has had to clean the water passages please feel free to give me any suggestions thanks

Clint,
You should only do one thread per problem. Otherwise it's pretty hard to keep up.

Clint, if its just lime and calcium buildup your after then a 25:1 vinegar and water solution will work. Go to HD and get miracle grow sprayer. Hook it up to a garden hose, fill the tank of the sprayer with household vinegar hook another hose to the other side and your motor flushing ears.

Turn the water on and start the engine. Run it until it is warm and you can smell the vinegar comming out of the tell tale tube. Turn the engine off and tilt it all the way. You can't keep all the mix in the engine but a lot of it will stay.

Let is soak overnight and then run it on fresh clean water. If it's really bad enough to require flushing you'll see chunks of calcium and lime blowing out of it. It's best if you can put it in water and run it at speed. This will not remove corrosion build up, that requires a tear down.

Aluminum blocks need special care when cleaning. Most of the motor flush cleaning agents are for cast iron blocks and they will severly damage your aluminum block and heads.

Thanks. I am tearing down the motor tomorrow and hopefully I will be able to clean every little nook and cranny. Last time we tore it apart we found a 1/4" piece of old impeller and hoped we had the problem fixed. If we don't find an obstruction this time it's going to become an anchor

Nah, they're not heavy enough to be an anchor you need at least a 350 chevy for that.
